Bathroom Tile Size Question

For our contemporary bathroom which is of average size, I will be using 8"x24" tile on the shower walls but have a choice of tile for the floors -- either 8x24 or 18x18. What do you recommend?

What type/design/color/pattern of tile?

I like the idea of large-scale tile in the shower, but I'd keep looking for smaller floor tile -- drastically smaller floor tile. You need variation in size; that is, you don't want ALL the tile to be large, and smaller tile is less slippery.

Re the overall lighting plan - our bathroom is a little wider than yours (6') but also long and narrow, about 6x10. On one long wall is a space for the scale, then the door, toilet, and a bump out at the far end. On the other long wall is a 60" 2-sink vanity with full mirror, then a space, then the shower (which is about 5' long and covers the short end of the room. We have two of these lights - one over each sink (couldn't fit lights at the sides) and a shower rated light over the shower, and the lighting is excellent. No additional overhead light is needed. My first glance didn't see the border as "too much", until it was focused on. Then it did seem a bit large. I would live with this for a while and add details as others mentioned. You could play with the tile using contact paper to change tile size, add black trim ect. But even the inspiration pics, there are things I would change. Final thoughts are the pattern is is a bit large and yes to wider black trim. A half round black on top of the upper tiles would work as a detail and easy to install. Not sure painting tiles is the answer. Love the BW ticking shower curtain shown. I just finished my kitchen with BW tile and bead board to bring back the feeling of my little 50s house. It is great to know others are around that have some comfort with this style.

I just priced out the cost of the Standard colored fixtures in my house at about $1300 in 1931. Those prices do include the faucets and the drain fittings but that's still a tremendous amount of money, comparable to the cost of a top of the line Ford Model A. I have always known the fixtures were expensive, but didn't realize just how very pricey. The original building permit for the home was for a construction cost of $15,000 and that would put the plumbing fixtures at almost 10% of the complete cost

I have a similar closet in my 1950’s home. It the only bathroom that is still original. The closet has a push touch to open and close. Yes it can bang into the door if the main door is half open. Not an issue if the main door is either open or closed. Start another thread with a floor plan. How can we offer suggestions if we don’t know dimensions?

Actually, it looks like the 8x24 is a different tile so I would have to go with the 18x18 for the floor. Thanks for your help!

I'd go with the 18 X 18. My master bath has 12 X 24 on the shower walls, 12 X 12 on the shower floor, and 24 X 24 for the non-shower floor. It doesn't look busy because it is a very uniform, low-key pattern. If you use a linear drain, you can use any size tile since the shower floor only needs to be a single, flat plane. I dealt with the issue of slipperiness by getting a tile that has great skid resistance. They aren't rough, but they have an almost unnoticeable striation on the surface that makes them entirely safe.

I have another shower where the tile is very slippery so I went with 2 X 2 tiles: this means I have a lot of grout lines that increase the traction.
