I just discovered the wonder of self-tapping screws!

I mean, I've seen them; I have a Kreg pockethole jig, and those are self-tapping screws.

But just now I made a new deck/platform to replace the particlewood one on a lectern at church.

I needed to screw the metal support to the underside, and I was worried that in drilling a pilot hole, I might go right through the top.

I got out the plastic drill stop I had, though I don't trust it, and was trying to figure out which bit, so I picked up the screws I'd pulled from my stash and realized they had split tips!

So, I just used a nail to make a divot at the positioning marks (which I always do when drilling into wood, bcs I cannot keep the drill from "walking"), and just drove those screws home.

No danger of overdrilling, because I didn't need to drill!

I've now used up all the self-tapping screws I had in my stash, and I'm wondering if I should make it a point to just get them in a couple of sizes, and maybe toss all the random screws.

What do you think?
