I need advice replacement windows in NE Ohio

I have three 1980 wood windows that do not function well or insulate well (I think they are “ pre” good insulating glass) Anyway I know I do want fiberglass. But Anderson costs a fortune, Pella has a powder coated exterior that looks crummy and needs maintenance, and Marvin has two choices- infinity and integrity. I have new construction Marvin in wood (awesome) but no other experience with Marvin. So my question is: has anyone used either Integrity or Infinity? Is there an advantage over one vs. the other?

1) Why have you zero'd in on fiberglass? Not a bad choice at all, but wood or vinyl often have compelling options if your priorities trend more to either looks or performance.

2) Andersen doesn't make fiberglass windows. Additionally, they are generally less expensive than Marvin in their fibrex composite lines which would be the closest competing product that they offer to fiberglass

3) Integrity and Infinity are both well built products. Neither are off the charts when it comes to thermal or structural performance metrics, but both are well made nonetheless. The Integrity has a real wood interior and a fair price point, so that is a pretty nice option if you want a stained interior. The Infinity is nice as well, it is mainly designed to compete in the "replacement window" space, where there is only one exclusive dealer per market, etc. The wood look interior on that product is nice and is stainable, just isn't real wood.

4) In the event that you are looking for an interior that is not real wood, you may want to consider some of the higher end vinyl window options as they will outperform fiberglass in nearly every measureable area (including DP= strength), and typically do so at a lower price point, better warranty, etc. There are some sensational performing fiberglass lines out of Canada, but the stuff here, while again not bad, is more form than function.

yea wait ... first i think of soil compaction.. you simply standing and working in your beds.. i know OH has a lot of heavy clay.. and tromping around your beds early .... MIGHT lead to cement later in the summer ... next.. it would depend on how far you want to divide .. and the potential for heave.. as the ground goes in and out of thaw ... if you are simply halving a giant piece.. you can probably get away with it.. but if you were dividing down to single plants.. you might find them all above the surface in a few weeks ... i too am anxious to get out there.. but there is plenty to do .. cleaning up a lot of stuff.. before i spend too much time actually walking in the beds .. or making cement ... actually.. the first thing i had to do when i moved here with a 3 year old.. was build a sandbox.. so the kid would stop digging up everything i just planted .. lol ... make any sense?? you know.. what it really comes down to ... i dont trust mother nature ... she will mess with you gratuitously .. i still expect her to throw winter at me, with a vengeance .... it may not happen ... probably not ... but i trust her as far as i can throw her. .. ken ps: i though you were a guilt momma.. lol ... and i was wondering what you were guilty about.. lol ...

tmac1, not sure but the post was 8 years ago. BUt that was why WoW posted about the 30 degree to limit the projection, but also disclaimered it based on the depth of the overhang.

How should I get my roses ready to winter in NE Ohio?

Here is my method that I posted in my city's Rose Society. So the times are suited for here. :) I have a 100% success rate with 54 potted roses. :) Carol's Method of Overwintering Potted Roses in Garage • Keep deadheading until it's time for the roses to go into the garage. I give my last dose of fertilizing around the 2nd week of September. • In October, start watering a little bit less so the roses can experience some dryness. • When the night time temperature gets to about -6C it is time to move the pots into the garage. If it’s just one or two nights of low temperatures, I usually leave them outside…but you can get a bit of blackening of the canes. • Do not cut the plant down. Leave it as it is, but remove the leaves right to the cane. Give the rose one last really good water before using a dolly to move the pots into the garage. • Cover the roses with old thick blankets, layers of old flannel sheets or old sleeping bags when the outside temperatures get to about -20C. • The roses should experience darkness. If you have windows, then cover them with. It doesn't matter if the garage door is opened and closed. • Around March, check to see if the pots have dried out. If they have, give each rose about 1/2 cup water if they’re in a big pot (55 L are what mine are and about 22” across the top). If they’re in a smaller pot, then you should probably check them earlier – maybe early January and only give them ¼ cup or less of water. Once you start watering, you should continue once every month. • As the weather starts to warm up in the spring, the blankets can be removed. • Once the temperature gets to about 5C outside on a regular basis you can move the rose outside during the day, and recover with blankets to give protection overnight, or move back into the garage for the night. Moving the roses back into the garage is preferable to covering them…but if you have too many roses to make that feasible, then covering will do. • Water well once the pots get moved outside. The water will help protect the roots from cold. • Caveat, my garage is dry walled and probably insulated. Hope that helped, Carol

No they don’t. Fibrex is vinyl and saw dust, not fiberglass. You can by it from Home Depot for a fraction of the price (100 series) of the nfinity . Even the very most expensive form of Andersen in Renewal is still generally close to infinity, although that will vary by market . It’s possible that you have a renewal quote 30% more than an infinity quote but that is not a general rule.

Other than that id say you are on the right track. Marvin is better. Integrity is more widely available (often cheaper)and has that wood interior, where the advantage of infinity is that it’s pretty much a guarantee that you are dealing with a very solid company. Marvin doesn’t give those dealerships to chuck in a truck that can buy integrity from the local supply house or Andersen from home depot
