Idyll #434 - Things are Looking Up
Comments (102)For you, Kathy, Happy Birthday, a little late! This Hosta is Frances Williams, one of the first I ever bought, and a split of my original, brought here from my other house. I raked up the Cenotaph garden today, took about ten minutes, and a good thing too, as it is absolutely freezing cold, and really windy. The sun is out though, so all is not lost. Gee, Eden, that Bella is a sweetie! I chuckled though, at the egg-hunt photo, because I could tell that you had had many pots on those steps in the past! We got TCS to church on time this morning, shirt and tie, understanding that he has to be quiet and not squirm too much. It was a communion Sunday today. In the past, TCS has always declined, but, feeling very grown up he decided to participate. Who in their right mind would give a seven year old a small plastic cup of grape juice and make them sit there and hold it for 15 minutes? By the time he got to have it, he had split the cup and had to drink out of the side of it. He got his piece of bread and played around with it until it no longer looked like bread. He ate it anyway, and pronounced it delicious. How spiritual. DH and I could hardly keep a straight face through the whole service. Having a lovely quiet day today, counting my blessings and thinking about my gardens. I had lots of stuff I wanted to say to you folks, but I have been interrupted so many times that I forget what I was going to say. So, on that happy note, I am off to cook a wonderful meal of mac and cheese (home made, at least) and hotdogs for the masses. Cheers, Julie...See MoreWhat's For Dinner #266
Comments (100)Thank you Nancy (WIZARDNM)-I made your ham loaf last night and it was fabulous. Ok it does have a funny story behind it, after I get it all put together and put it in the oven I noticed I didn't put in the ground mustard-luckily this was only 5 minutes into cooking time. So I yank it out and put the mustard in it, moosh, moosh, pat pat, make presentable..no one will know but me! About 45 min later house smelling yummy, I go pour off fat as directed, well instead of using a baster to suck out the fat because I hate cleaning that "sucker", I decide to tilt the pan over a can in the sink. Well as I was tilting the loaf decided that it needed a little cleaning and half of it fell into the sink...plunk, slat, moosh everywhere. After much cursing, the other half went back in got lots of basting since its other half decided the sink was a better place than the oven...arrggghhh. But it was fabulous! Everyone ate it up. DD even ate it and she hates ham, first thought it was meatloaf until DH told her it was ham but she looked at me and said "that's ok Mom, it still taste good even though I hate ham". : ) So thank you. Oh I also owe thanks to someone on the another thread that mentioned that she heats 2 pizza stones and then places the pizza in between to make it like a pizza oven..tried that technique and that worked wonders. Thank you all for your suggestions. Sol-thank you for the recipe! Heidi...See MoreIf You Were a Newlywed in the 70s...
Comments (68)How did I miss this thread five years ago? I see names of those that I miss seeing here 🙁 My mom and my grandmother were great cooks. I learned from both and we have always eaten well. I grew up eating food cooked from scratch and my grandparents and parents always had gardens. My grandmother loved to can and freeze. She made the most wonderful veggie soup that she canned every year. What I would give to have a bowl of that soup!! I have always cooked the same. In our early years, my grandmother would can green beans and other items for me and we would get together and prepare/freeze corn. The Mr. and I don't always have a garden, and when we do it is usually small but I still buy certain things from the produce store and put up. We do grow tomatoes and I love making pasta sauce and freezing for the coming year. I learned to bake from scratch too. Now that I am retired, I enjoy finding new recipes to try. I really do enjoy cooking!...See MoreCooking routines
Comments (37)When my children were still at home, I planned a week at a time, taking into account who had activities when/what day. There was a rotation of multiple menus each week. Then children left home and husband and I were alone for a year - did pretty much the same. Then husband took a job at a Maine boarding school but we kept our house in KY. I went up for 4-6 weeks in the fall, back for nearly 3 months in the winter. We ate in the dining hall every night except Sat, when I cooked. DH was home for various vacations and for the summer. We ate out once or twice a week - meals a bit less planned. Since I lost DH 11 1/2 yrs ago, I would describe my meal planning as more a shopping plan. I keep lots of my favorite staples on hand so I can cook whatever strikes me. I usually buy a rotesserie chicken at Fresh Market every two weeks - can get many different meals out of it and often just freeze wings and kegs for future use in a soup or with mushrooms. I rarely spend more than 20 minutes fixing dinner as I eat pretty simply. I nearly always gave a cheese omelet once a week, and in winter, tomato soup with cheese on an Eng muffin (fewer calories than grilled cheese). In the summer, I always keep chicken salad I buy from a gourmet deli and gave that with melon or tomatoes. A time or two each winter, I'll fix shrimp/asparagus risotto and yea, it reheats beautifully. Right now, I have a pkg of individually flash frozen sea scallops and some fresh asparagus - had planned on fixing it tonight but elderly dig is unwell and I'm worn out from dealing with him all day, so it will be postponed til Thurs or Fri and tonight will be leftover black beans and rice. I'm all about easy, quick, and mainly prepared freshly by me....See Moreyeonassky
