"Could you frame out the larger mirror in wood trim and stain to match new mirror so that it would be a mirror then a mirror?" ThatÂs what I was thinking about doing. I wanted to solve the technical problems first, of how to hang, and the aesthetic issue, of would it look right in the first place. I stained other oak shelves in the room to match the vanity, so could do that. (The craftsman mirror is not oak, like the vanity, though: I think it is rubberwood. If I framed the big one I would have to use oak, but could probably get it to match well enough.) Assuming the cables are attached to screws in the studs over the big mirror, I could conceal that, maybe, by having the wood trim on the big mirror pass over that, with a small hollow in the back. The big mirror goes almost wall to wall on the sides, and right up to the round base of the light fixture above, so if I framed it out, whatever I did would have to float on the surface of the mirror and be adhered with glue.

Your Home Depot will sell heavy duty mirror mounting hardware (hooks) for your walls that can handle "tons" of weight. Weigh your mirror after it is assembled and buy the appropriate ones. They have many sizes available depending on the weight they will carry. Most of the heavy duty ones are triangle in shape and use 3 or 4 nails. I would personally avoid the installation method that uses one wall hook and a horizontal cable between the two vertical frame members on your mirror (like you would find on most paintings). A more heavy duty method is to install a ring on each vertical frame member that loops over its own wall hook. It is more secure and you share the mirror weight on two wall hooks. One caution, using the 2 wall hook method, you need to be "dead on perfect" on your placement of all your hardware because you cannot adjust it like the cable method that allows you to reposition. The rings attached to the mirror get placed over the wall hook, and that is it. If you are off, the mirror will be crooked, and you need to move around your hardware.

I've never seen anything like that either. Have you ever used Ook professional hangers? They're great, it's all I use. Ook hangers. They'll hold a lot of weight and no honking holes in the wall, even for heaviest hangers pins (nails) are still thin. Our FR is low light and L shaped, so a large room that felt like a cave. I put 3 large mirrors in various spots to catch sunlight and bounce if off other mirrors. So the main focus was on position with stud being secondary. I had always used Ooks for everything else so decided to try them with the mirrors. For the largest mirror (about 36" wide by 30" high with a 3" frame) I used 3 of the treble type (they will hold 75lbs or 100 lbs). One on each outer edge of frame and one in center. Think I might have hit one stud. No problems, no big holes in the wall, they've been there for years. I used to be only able to find them at LNT, but since they've closed I've noticed them other places. For sure Lowe's has them.

Thanks, all. I am embarrassed to say that when I completely unpacked the mirror I found that it did in fact have D-rings and wire on it already. I thought that the reason it was packed up was that it had no way to hang--isn't that why I didn't hang it when I bought it last August? Isn't that why it was still covered in cardboard and tape 14 months later? Jiminy. So, the wire is taken care of, but I don't have a stud finder, so I am going to borrow my neighbor's tomorrow(if he can find it). Meanwhile, I'm faced with the challenge of deciding where I want to hang it. I planned to hang it in the dining room, but when I had my daughters hold it up there tonight, it was a disaster--I don't know why I didn't think through what it would be reflecting. An extra view of the pile of recycling stacked on the counter next to the back door? No, thanks.
