Marble CounterTops vs Granite
Comments (4)People are likely to tell you to do a search--which is a good idea. There have been several threads on this in here and I definitely found them helpful. In the meantime, I can tell you that I have carrara on my perimeter countertops. My GC and KD both said "NO WAY" in the beginning, but I forged ahead! Mine have been in for about six weeks and I love them. The biggest cons you'll hear are staining and etching. I haven't had any staining issues at all. My husband left a lid from a margarita mix container on one counter and it did etch (acidic). But I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who can find it. What you'll generally hear on here is that if you're willing to live with some "patina" meaning some etching and possibly staining (though there are poultice recipes that people seem to have great success with), then marble is a great choice. If you want a completely blemish-free surface, it may not be for you. Definitely do a search on here, though--and good luck!...See MoreHelp, my marble tile floor doesn't match my marble slab countertops.
Comments (105)Renee you must be overwhelmed with all of these comments. Your countertops are GORGEOUS, so I do hope you keep them. Sophie's suggestion to stain the floors is well worth looking into. For what it is worth my suggestion for your backsplash is to go with a simple solid tile in a lighter color that coordinates with the countertop. I would suggest you not go too small with the tile- 3x6 to 4x12 would be a good size to stick with. You want to avoid too much movement in the backsplash as the counter (and the floor) have quite a bit of movement and you do not want them competing. Let the countertop be the star of the show. Good luck and let us know how it all ends up for you....See MoreBlack marble floor tiles and what color for shower and countertop?
Comments (3)"I would rather go with a light color or white." There's your answer. "Should the shower base be the same color as the shower walls if I use the solid surface wall panels?" What do you like? I prefer light walls. "Is it okay to mix a solid surface shower material with a light colored granite or quartzite countertop? I know it depends on the pattern and color of the stone, but in general, is it okay to mix the two?" There are no shower police. Do you what you like. If it looks good to you, then go ahead....See Morewhat colour floor and counters for my maple kitchen?
Comments (12)The existing hardwoods are doing what they are supposed to do. Wood shrinks as it dries out. If your home doesn't have humidity control, then you will find the wood will 'gap'. A new wood (especially wide plank) won't fix that. A vinyl will probably be OK...but it is a LOWER VALUE product. Scratches on a hardwood are normal. It's what they do. It tells us the FINISH is taking the abuse while leaving the wood intact. A different hardwood won't fix that. A vinyl floor won't allow you to refinish so the same things that cause scratches in hardwood will cause scratches in vinyl. A wood floor like yours can have a full sand/refinish for roughly $5/sf. That should include a high-quality two part finish (will not turn yellow or orange) and your choice of stain. Maple cabinets look VERY good with CRISP white counters. Stay away from the yellows or ivories...stick with the bluish tones of white. Refinishing the hardwoods with a clear coat finish will allow your floors to stay VERY pale. If the hardwood is maple as well, you can have the refinisher add a UV protectant that STOPS maple from turning yellow. Maple is photosensitive = gets yellower/darker when exposed to light. The money you save with the floor REFINISHING instead of removal ($2/sf) and replacement ($10-$12/sf???) and installation ($2.50/sf) you can have NEW LIGHTING and NEW PAINT....See Moremvcanada
