how do we finish white oak rift cut cabinets and preserve the nat
Comments (6)Try General Finishes High Performance Topcoat. I'm experimenting with it on red oak. It very much preserves the natural color of the wood. So much so that I'm wondering how to enhance the grain just a wee bit before I topcoat w/ it. No yellowing (on red oak) whatsoever. General Finishes contact phone # 800-783-8050. They're located in Wisconsin so Central Time Zone. I've called them before & will give them another call for suggestions on slightly enhancing the grain of red oak. It's available in satin, semi-gloss and gloss. McFeeley's has the best price that I've found. McFeeley's Oh, the stuff is super easy to apply. (I'm using a foam brush but it's sposed to spray nicely, too.) The only complaints that I've read about it is that it maybe dries too fast. I ordered some extender but haven't tried it yet since I'm only doing small pieces so far. Comments (2)Brookhaven does a gorgeous rift cut cabinet contemporary cabinet. I considered using it with a mix of white oak and greywashed oak, but ultimately went with my walnut addiction. I think I would do white oak with the more yellowy oak(I assume) of your floors. Comments (6)I did a finish on white oak once and it looked very similar to that 5% white. I honestly can't remember what I used but the sample on that website looks like what I did. I then clear coated over it. I like the fact that it is an all in one finish and you don't have to clear coat. Maybe if you got some damage down the road you could light sand and apply some more. I think some call this this technique liming oak rather than whitewash not sure though. Comments (16)Thank you so much for the links! nycbluedevil - here is the link to your threads. Your kitchen and bathroom are beautiful. It looks like you used stained walnut for your kitchen and stained rift cut oak for your bath. Beautiful! http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg1011163919891.html http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/bath/msg0622101018782.html detroit_burb - those links are great! I am really torn. We are stuck with clear coat, plain sawn red oak floors which are pretty grainy. We are going for a more updated clean line contemporary look with our ranch style house. My concern with the walnut cabinets is that the grain will compete with the grain of the floor hence the interest in rift cut oak as an alternative. But I really like the color of natural walnut - nice too that it's a little easier on the budget because we would just clear coat it rather than stain it. If we go rift cut - we would have to stain it to get the darker contrasting cabinet color that I think the space needs but it's more expensive and I wonder if it's too modern. Ugh. This is the decision I've obsessed about the most. Bathrooms were easy! Lighting easy! It's just these cabinets! Any thoughts greatly appreciated. I just saw this thread too which helped - but still I'm wondering about how it all works with the red oak floors. Following this post too...
