White stain/wash on rift cut oak?

After seeing senator 13's gorgeous white oak kitchen I've decided to go for white uppers and rift cut white oak lowers, instead of the planned natural cherry lowers. I'm really excited by the new vision for the kitchen, but I'm struggling with the finish for the oak. I'm a little nervous about going with a completely natural finish, as I'm worried about the oak yellowing over time. I've seen pictures of rift cut white oak with a VERY subtle white stain....not pickled or cerused, just the merest hint of white to bring out the grain and keep the white/grey tint that natural white oak usually has. My cabinet maker has no idea what I mean or how to acheive it. Is there anyone out there who has something similar, or anyone who can tell me how the finish could be done? Thanks so much.

Sorry, still haven't figured out how to post pics, but this is the type of stain I'm thinking. Unfortunately cabinet maker won't use this product, or it would be so much easier.

Farmgirlinky has posted that her cabinetmaker used Monocoat on her cabinets. Perhaps you could show your cabinetmaker a picture of her spectacular kitchen.

Brookhaven does a gorgeous rift cut cabinet contemporary cabinet. I considered using it with a mix of white oak and greywashed oak, but ultimately went with my walnut addiction. I think I would do white oak with the more yellowy oak(I assume) of your floors. I'm cross posting this from the kitchen forum in the hopes of getting help from you wood experts here on the Flooring forum. :) If anyone would be so kind as to share your photos of stained rift sawn white oak, I'd be so appreciative! I'd like to gather a collection of photos to show my cabinet maker to help me describe what I want. I'm not totally happy with the door sample I got from my cabinet maker (see photos below). I really like the colour of the stain but I don't like how opaque it is because it totally masks all the figure of the wood (the medullary ray flecks and natural shimmer of the wood) and I hate how the stain darkened the grain so dramatically. I do like to see the grain, but not with so much contrast to the surrounding wood. The unstained backside of the door has wonderful figure, with a beautiful shimmer to the wood and lots of little medullary ray flecks. Here's a photo (note that it appears they used a mix of QS white oak, RS white oak and plain sawn red oak to construct the door): Here is an example of the rich, lively finish I would like for my cabinets: This was the best photo I could find. All the other photos I found were blurry, didn't have enough resolution to show the detail of the wood, or were of QS vs RS oak. QS oak is very popular but it's terribly difficult to find photos of RS white oak. Please help! I need more photos of stained RS oak that show the detail of the wood.

Don't even think about it until you apply a finish coat on top of your stain samples to see what the colors will actually look like. They can change a lot once you apply finish. It's always critical when testing stains to take your sample through the entire process-- sand with the same grits, apply stain in the same way, apply the same kind and number of finish coats. Skipping any of the steps is the route to bad surprises.

The first issue is actually NOT the floor. Your inspo is probably a factory created cabinet. By nature a more consistent finish ......call this current "internet lust" and much more difficult to achieve in a local cabinet shop. Far more difficult, where pieces and parts may indeed take stain differently. I'd be very certain, with a LOT of sampling testing from that shop, well in advance - before I tackled the flooring selection. Truthfully - your best solution may be a white oak sanded on site floor, stained only when you know the final finish of those cabinets, and even stained, AFTER the cabinetry is installed. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5983411/help-wrong-finish-on-white-oak-cabinet https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6230815/how-to-keep-natural-white-oak-color-on-cabinets The floor below was pre existing, and the kitchen redone, new island years after. lime wax/lime wash is spectacular on oak. You can also stain and then lime wash for a slightly deeper color.

2 - What is the stain you have chosen for your white oak? I think Scherr's will use only Benjamin Moore products, but perhaps I could match fairly easily if you are going with a different brand.
Can't wait to see how your kitchen turns out!

Manufacturer is going to show me samples this week of 2%, 3% and 5% gray stain. I'm thinking very light, so probably 2% or 3%. I'll let you know what I go with. Are you leaning towards oak? There are some gorgeus photos on Houzz.

I did a finish on white oak once and it looked very similar to that 5% white. I honestly can't remember what I used but the sample on that website looks like what I did. I then clear coated over it. I like the fact that it is an all in one finish and you don't have to clear coat. Maybe if you got some damage down the road you could light sand and apply some more. I think some call this this technique liming oak rather than whitewash not sure though. Your kitchen will look really great with what you are planning.
