Bad news..... saw my first Jap Beetle today!
Comments (14)I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner and rather than toss out the water that my kids didn't finish, I brought it outside to water my zinnias. And it was then that I noticed that two of the leaves, had that famous lacy pattern. I said outloud, I wonder what's been eating you. And I looked around and sure enough, two Japanese Beetles were munching away. I went into the garage and pulled out my neem oil, mixed up a batch and set off spraying. Dang, I hate these bugs. This will be my first year using neem, so I hope it works well. Oh, both buggers are no longer of this world!!!...See MoreAre kids today fatter than when you were a kid?
Comments (28)I think it is more of the popularaity of the fast food places than it is working moms or kids vegging out in front of the TV. Kids today are involved in much more activities as compared to when I was a child. When parents have that much running around it is much easier to run through a drive thru or get pizza on the way home (stay at home or working mom) then it is to make a meal, get everyone to sit down, clean up and get out the door. I know because I have four kids and it's not that they are in too much by themselves but with 4 kids it makes for a busy week. I am a sahm but I still struggle with getting them from school, getting homework done, and getting them a nutritious dinner. When we get home in the evening that is when the dishes are cleaned off the table. It is so tempting to just run to McDonalds. Also, did you ever notice how many kids have lunchables packed in their lunches? Those things are packed with sodium, fat, calories, and tons of preservatives. Plus my kids' schools starting selling snacks (like nutty buddies and ho hos for lunch) I tell my kids "no you eat the snack that I pack and you are not getting a ho ho" But of course their friends get them (12 fat grams in the pack of 2) and share some of it with them from time to time. Can you imagine the amount of fat grams these kids are getting? Over 30 at lunch with their lunchable and their nutty buddies and then 30 more at dinner if they eat at a fast food place... not to mention any cookies they might snack on through the day? That amount of fat will make an adult gain weight. I hear that some schools actually have fast food like McDonalds available to them. So even if the kids were active in sports and activities they are getting too many fat grams to offset it :( Also I heard that kids today are getting too much juice. There are a lot of calories in juice and a lot of natural sugars. It is better for them to eat the fruit than it is to drink the fruit juice. I always have OJ but after 2 glasses of it they have to switch to water. My kids would drink a half gallon of OJ a day if I let them (each one of them) So kids are drinking a lot more calories than they use to as well....See MoreWe Have a New Fur Kid!!!
Comments (74)Lynn, I saw your post while reading and trying to type the other day -- when Lulu was on top of my hand and laptop. I just read through this thread again and realized I never posted. First a congrats and a thank you for being there for his special needs. As Sprinroz said -- I thank the Universe for bringing the right dogs and people together. We have some very happy families and it's a great way to start a new year. I didn't have any names to offer -- I like Maverick, Scout, Knight and Bishop, but a name has to fit the dog. Have you picked one yet? Lulu picker hers. I started with Lucy, Luna, Maya, Missy, Sandy, Molly and some others. I said Lulu just thinking out loud with L names when she didn't respond to Lucy or Luna. She picked Lulu. Not a favorite of ours necessarily, but it will become a loved name because it is hers. Lulu it is....See MoreAnother new Fur kid!!!
Comments (33)Thanks to everyone!!! She has settled in very well!! LOL, it has been what, 36 hours? Parker slept the first night on the rug in front of the bed, quietly, and when I got up at 2 am to potty, she told me needed to go, too. After one feeding in the laundry room, she goes there when she gets hungry(opens the door herself), checks for food, then comes and tells me, so I can fix the problem! I was a little concerned that the reason for her surrender was seperation anxiety, as she has been a fairly tight velcro dog, so I did a little test yesterday, and took the car down to the mailbox (I normally walk, but did not want to be gone that long), and then peeked through the glass, and she was just lying on the floor. Whew!! When my little girl came to ride, she did not even move off of the rug!! We are working on leash manners, and hoping to sign up for some obedience classes in February, when my favorite trainer starts back up! I am betting her people moved into a rental, and the landlord had a coronary when he saw this dog....so they brought her back. I had a Pyr barndog in TX for years, and they handle heat just fine. I want t thank the Universe for sending me this dog, and for sending the other furbabies to the rest of the HDC members!!...See Moreneetsiepie
