If they aren’t 100% sure that it’s not benign, could it still be worth it to do a biopsy anyway (or aspirate if they do those for bladder tumors)?

The biopsy is invasive for checking the tumor, she'd need to be anesthetized and we don't want to go that route with her-she had a bad reaction to anesthesia once before. We're going to just go along and keep her happy and hope that it's benign. If it's not, there is little that can be done anyway. Any therapy is difficult-there is no chemo for canine bladder cancer, and surgery isn't effective. Just pallative care-we're going to keep her as comfortable as we can for as long as we can and pray it's benign, but even the vet agrees its best to just make her comfy and love her up.

Our great pyr had a lump on her toe that our vet was sure was cancer. He had seen it many times and told us it was a classic presentation. It was also not uncommon in large breeds. She was in a lot of pain and couldn't put weight on it. He did aspirate cells, but it would take seven business days to get it back (I never realized biopsies take longer than blood tests.) Due to the pain and his conviction, and our fear of the cancer spreading, we opted for the removal of the toe. Surgery was the next day, went well and she recovered (walking) within a week.

The biopsy came back negative. It turned out to be an infection in and around her toe bone.. Chances are the protocol may have been the same as bone infections are hard to treat.

My windy point? I'm hoping it isn't cancer.

Make her happy. If she will eat low phosphorus dog food, try the different brands. It has helped my cat.

Oh, this is so sad. It sounds like there is no decision making to do, whether to treat the disease or not. Just keep her happy and as pain free as possible- that's your job now.

Oh, neetsie, I am so sorry. We are in practically the same situation with our 15 year-old border collie/newf mix and our 18 month old lab mix. He just adores her and will even go out to get her if I tell him to do that (she is also deaf now and tends to just stay out until she sees me which is fine if she is in a spot from which she can see the door, otherwise...).

I would do exactly what you’re doing. Our current dog is our fourth and it’s taken the first three for us to really realize that the best thing we can do for our dogs is let them go when it’s time. Hugs to you and both fur babies.

Neetsie, I am so sorry about your Aurora. Having gone through an inoperable cancer diagnosis with our pup last fall, you are doing the right thing. Enjoy these days.

I’m so sorry! I’m just glad that she has you to brighten her last days and fill them with love.

I sincerely thank you all for your kind words of support. It's so hard to look at her and know that she's going to die sooner than later and she hasn't a clue. I almost wish we didn't know. and found out late like we did with a rottweiler we had years ago.

We're going to continue to spoil her. She's already spoiled rotten! I'm just giving her extra scratchies on her flank that she really likes. I let her sleep in our room last night, on the floor but that was not good for any of us, she paced a lot and growled at the cats who sleep on the bed. Tonight she'll have to stay in her bed in the family room.

We don't know how much time she's got-once it's spread it's just a matter of months, but the tumor is relatively small right now, so it may be a year-we hope anyway! The weather is turning and it's warming up, so we might take the dogs to the beach. She's only been once, and she stuck with the Labs the whole time (she grew up with our two dear departed labs) so we'll take her and see how she does. It will be good for us anyway-we always liked taking our dogs to the beach. But mostly we're just going to let her do what she likes-which is lay at our feet with something she's stolen from the kitchen. Like a jar of pickles or, like right now, a package of crackers. She doesn't eat these things, she just guards them.

Our cat’s oncology vet treats all different types of cancer in cats and dogs. I didn’t know there wasn’t a chemo protocol for bladder cancer.

I hope your Aurora’s tumor is benign, and if not, that she has an abundance of good days ahead of her.

Apparently the chemo only extends life a few months and isn't very effective. Radiation therapy is more effective, but still not worth the effort since it's incurable. I am hoping it's benign, but as I said, the vet (and our research) doesn't feel that is the case. The tumor is still small, so we hope it's slow growing and doesn't spread for a long time.
