Bad news..... saw my first Jap Beetle today!

... that's always bad news, isn't it? But it was inevitable - at least in my yard!!

Yes, it is. I dread it. The lusty month of May is the only time we seem to be free of pollen dust and beetles.

None yet in Sanford, but we may wake up to them.

I'm still hoping I moved so far out in the country they lost my address LOL I was lucky last year and didn't see a single one here. Hopefully there isn't anything they find a particular taste for around here.

Harvestman , my apologizes if my post came off snotty. Was not meant in that way. Internet speak fails at times. You have helped me a great deal in my fruit growing quest, I appreciate the effort you put in here. The 2010 Midwest Tree Fruit Spray Guide has Imidan 70wp listed for summer cover sprays to control Jap beetles in apples. But like the Cornell guide not in plums. My guess that dont want imidan on stone fruits near harvest? There are some organic products people use, but from what I've read, they repel and do not kill. If you do not kill them, they will burrow in your lawn, lay eggs, and multiply. One female can create 60 beetles per season. So you need to treat for grubs as well. Milky Spore may or may not work in my zone and is expensive. I'm going to try to get some Grub-X down but don't like killing earthworms. One product is Bye Bye Beetles, used by a rose grower in the southeast and recommended, an organic and repellant. See link. I may try it at some point, but didn't want to wait while it shipped and can't remember the cost. Saw my first one June 21 which was early, picked a few off and squished, started the soapy water thing. Then I cut back all my repeat blooming roses and am watching the rest of it. Haven't seen any since but that is not to say they will not find my echinacea, cherry trees, rose leaves, pussywillow or preference du jour. If too many come back, I will spray with Sevin. My primary reservation was bees, but if there are no flowers to attract bees, there's not much chance of harming them if I spray early am or late pm while they're out. My cat heaven knows what he gets his paws into roaming around, everyone treats their lawn, and I did for the first time this year in quite a few years, just got too awful, hated to do it, and nowhere near got it all, but much better. Some people cover their roses with nylon net and cut off the blooms which are the main attractant. Hated to sacrifice the blooms but won't use anything with imidacloprid because it kills bees, saw it myself, and has residual action. Also Sevin won't protect newly-opened buds. Pyrethrin knocks them dead (in time), think it's an organic, but doesn't last as long as Sevin. Then there are several home remedies involving concoctions I found recipes for on the web by googling, said to test on a small area first. Some of the ingredients are chili peppers, garlic, dishwashing liquid, lemon juice, vinegar, not all in the same recipe. A lot of rose people use Merit which you pour on the ground, must be done earlier and is a systemic, but if I'm not mistaken, it contains imidacloprid, bees again and other beneficial insects, does not discriminate. Good luck. My roses don't do a whole lot except two so let the perennials provide the color, didn't want to go through what I did last year again, in the hottest days, ruined that whole part of summer stewing about the dratted things. The only hopeful thing on the horizon is that some are reporting seeing some with eggs on their thoraxes? (white spots) and may or may not kill those. Those are laid by a parasitic wasp that destroys them when they hatch. But the gol darn things will mate first for sure as they do it sporadically before they die. I haven't seen any like that. There is also an ongoing experiment at the U of Michigan which involves innoculating adult beetles which will spread a killer virus from one to another, have been given to a few gardeners to test, but if it is safe, who knows how long before the rest of us get access to that? There are no known predators, some say ducks, maybe turkeys, chickens may or may not eat them but can't possibly get them all. No bird I know will eat them. Praying Mantises will, but it would take thousands to make a dent in bad outbreaks where they can number in the thousands and millions. That sums up what I've found so far. Hope it's helpful. It's a hassle to learn how to post photos, but once you finally get it, it doesn't seem all that hard after all. I still make mistakes and have to fix them; sometimes I don't see it right away. The hardest part for me was to understand how the sequence worked to get from my computer and show up in a post. I think it is the same for a lot of people. Once you can grasp that and how html works behind the scenes on websites, it makes more sense. html means hyper text markup language. That made no sense. Basically the code instructs the interpreter or "translater" on the server how to display everything on a web page but is not meant to actually be seen on the web page. It gets hugely complex and more kinds of code, and I can only do a little of it without looking it up somewhere and fighting with it. In your browser sometime, look at view>source, and you will see what it takes to format a web page on a complex web site such as this. Sometimes I find the code I need by doing that, and sometimes I have to figure it out another way. There's a forum around here to practice, but if you decide to try it, just keep hitting preview until you see your photo. I still have to do that before I hit submit. If you can't get it right away, don't feel bad, just scrap your post or take the photo code out and keep trying.

Yes, Claire, but May has ticks and deerflies, so i think it's a wash. At least the Jb's don't bite us or carry diseases. Plus, this year has had a gloriously temperate spring! Given how bad the JBs were last year, maybe this year will be a light one. I sure haven't noticed near as many grubs as i've dug to plant.

We have been seeing them for a few days now. I sprayed my KO roses with a mix of Neem Oil, dish liquid and water. So far, there have been no JBs on the roses.

I also sprayed the weeping cherry. The leaves didn't like the mix and I'm getting some yellowing there. There are a few JB damage spots as it was difficult to spray compared to the roses.

Like Tamelask, I've not seen nearly as many grubs as last year. In fact, less than a handful. In 2007, I'd find 20+ in some spots.

Saw my first squash bug yesterday, and I don't know which bug I despise more. Anyway, I SQUASHED it! LOL

squash bugs carry plant disease so i mind them more. So far as i know JBs don't transmit plant diseases.

We are here in Johnston County and haven't seen any so far, but were over run with them last year.
Just spoke with a friend in N. Raleigh and she has already trapped a slew of them. We treated the lawn and beds with Milky Spore. We have used it at other homes and know it works.

I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner and rather than toss out the water that my kids didn't finish, I brought it outside to water my zinnias. And it was then that I noticed that two of the leaves, had that famous lacy pattern. I said outloud, I wonder what's been eating you. And I looked around and sure enough, two Japanese Beetles were munching away. I went into the garage and pulled out my neem oil, mixed up a batch and set off spraying.

Dang, I hate these bugs. This will be my first year using neem, so I hope it works well. Oh, both buggers are no longer of this world!!!

killed about 100 today - and it's only June 6th!! Between the rabbits, the deer, the Jap Beetles, etc. etc. it's no wonder I have a garden! (and that I still love gardening...) :0)

I'm still not getting any damage on the roses. Last year, my roses were totally ugly from the JB damage. I think the Neem Oil is really working. These 100+ degree days are really difficult. I want to reapply the Neem, but I need lower evening temps to do it.

Knock on wood, but i haven't seen any yet. Granted, it's been too hot and i've been swamped with work so i haven't been out much, but i was out for a few hours this morn and didn't see a single one. Maybe it'll be a light year here. Know what you mean about spraying, Cameron. I need to do oil spray and it's too hot. I'm way late, but have some scale issues and it's about all that will deal with them. Also need to spray surround on my fruit trees. Looks like it's to cool down some later this week, so maybe then.

I don't spray - but i am telling you - this year may be different - Our Jap Maple always gets hit hard and it looks so beautiful now, I am rethinking....

Carrie -- I tried the Neem Oil mix on a few JM leaves. I'm not sure if it's suitable...perhaps with a lighter mixture. I was using the instructions on the Neem Oil for parts dish detergent, oil and water. If you decide to try it, do an unnoticeable sample first.

Neem Oil is a vegetable oil from the leaves and seeds of Neem (evergreen trees) in India. It isn't harmful to beneficial insects, birds or mammals. It stinks a bit and I think that's why the deer aren't nibbling my roses through the fence!
