on my way towards Madison, WI...
Comments (6)I am a native of the Detroit area and have been living in Madison for 3 years, and for a time commuting to downtown Chicago. My husband and I often drive the roads you are taking. This is what I would do...leave NW Ohio as early as possible, if you are nervous about traffic aim to hit Chicago after 10am but not later than 1pm central time.Chicago traffic is never great, but during those times on a Friday during the summer you have a chance of getting through w/out adding an extra hour or more to your drive. Follow the Eden's Expy./I-94 toward Milwaukee. You will exit Lake Cook and the gardens will be 4 miles off the expy. When leaving follow I-94 north to WI HWY. 50 toward Lake Geneva catch Hwy. 67 NW of Lake Geneva and take it up to I-94 at which point you are 3 exits east of Lake Mills and you have had a nicer drive than the interstate through Milwaukee. I strongly recommend Monches Farm also if you can do both. If you can, leave the Botanic Gardens and keep on I-94 to Milwaukee.South of Milwaukee follow I-894 to avoid downtown and pickup I-94 again east of Brookfield. Take exit 293 (Hwy. 16?) and follow directions from the Monches Farm website. If you return home on Monday and take I-90/39 be aware I-90 traffic out of Wisconsin is especially thick after holiday weekends so give yourself some extra time. Have a great time, the weather should be excellent....See MoreVisiting WI in August 2011 - questions!
Comments (12)The suggestion by the previous post is a very good day trip. The Dubuque Arboretum is very nice. Also, Mineral Point on the way back from Dubuque to Madison is a nice small town with some older buildings converted to artsy type of shops. The southwest part of Wisconsin has alot of nice scenery. Also, if you are based in Madison and want to go to Wisconsin Dells - hwy 12 through Baraboo is a nice drive alternate rather than the interstate. Just a warning Wisconsin Dells is fun but its the typical commerical tourist place if that's what you are into. If you are based in Madison every Saturday morning there is a farmer's market on the Square which can be very entertaining. Also, on Wednesday, Aug 3 is the last concert on the Square in Madison which is a free concert at the Captial Square that starts at 7 -- but you should get there plenty early put out a blanket and relax with food and beverage. Have a great trip!! P.S. I think the Wisconsin Forum becomes dead in May because we can finally get outside after being cooped up for 6 six months! Comments (26)abc_123 - what area are you referring to that has 12 homes for sale by realtors & 1 FSBO? Curious to know. My gut is telling me to find a short term rental apt (3mos lease or so) with a mgmt company that'd be willing to go month-to-month at the end of the lease. Start looking in May when we move, and hope to have something to close on at the end of the lease term. If we don't find anything, then well, okay, just go month-to-month until we do. Unfortunately, my online searches haven't turned up any places as nice (or as large) as what we can buy and if I have found a nice rental, they're not dog friendly (2 big dogs makes renting a bit difficult). Have found one place that'll do short term w/ big dogs- just need to check it out and get availability. However, my gut is also telling me that I should take advantage of some time that I have off in March by visiting and starting to scope out neighborhoods, and starting to narrow down what my husband and I REALLY want/need in our next home. It'll make our search more efficient later. Regarding Kraft relocating, reorg-ing, etc...Every home buyer faces that sort of risk/situation, but in perhaps slightly different terms. Anyone can lose their job and need to relocate to get a new one, get sick and need to downsize, get pregnant (unplanned) and need to upsize, get a job opportunity they can't pass up. They all need to move and didn't plan on doing that so soon. It happens. Hopefully people aren't maxing out their incomes with their expenses and have a savings they can tap into if necessary. That's what I've done and wow, I'm thankful for that. Not exactly sure what would happen if I didn't have the savings to offset any loss I might face with selling my current home. But, we bought our house as "right" as we could at the time and now I have that job opportunity I can't pass up. :-)...See MoreKD in WI? Please help
Comments (1)Karilivin, I just sent you an email about the Amish cabinet maker. Let me know if you dont receive it. I used the Gen at Pillar Design in Mukwanago. Contact info is available on her website. She is pricey but does a great job. She listens to what you want and has good ideas. All her measurements were spot on and she drew working blueprints and elevations. I did not use her services to help pick out countertops, tile or other finishes. She would be great at that but it wasn't in my budget. I can't remember if she charged for an initial consultation but she does charge for her travel time. I paid 3,000 for her services. It was worth it to us. I don't know if she works with any specific cabinet lines. As you know we did custom Amish. She will be able to direct you places. She does know her stuff.
