Visiting WI in August 2011 - questions!

Hello Wisconsin Gardeners!

I am coming to Wisconsin for the first week in August (in & out of Madison). I've been trying to get some idea online what I will find. I live in Florida, where we have a very active Garden Web "Florida" forum year-round. I am amazed that activity on the WI forum ended in May. Can you tell me why? Is it that people are active on more specific forums - but why after that date? It appears to me from the web that August is about as "dead" a month as can be in WI...perhaps it is the hottest so very little is planned? (I'm sorry for the heat wave you are currently having - the weather reports look like those in FL on and off from June thru October - but we have air conditioning everywhere while I assume you do not. I am used to alternating every 15 minutes working in the yard and being inside in the AC.)

I found on the WI GW forum a list of gardens to visit - but it was from 2000. Madison's Olbrich Garden was described as "small" which is not what it seems to be on their website today - which, by the way, lists flowers "in bloom" through June but not beyond. Do not flowers bloom in July in Wisconsin?

1) What should I expect to see blooming in public gardens, on highways and byways, in private gardens? (Of course, I will surely visit a nursery for an overview with labels!)

2) What gardens within a 2-day drive of Madison do you recommend?

3) Also, I'm interested in historic buildings.

4) Thinking of visiting the Lunt's house - is the acreage there also of gardening interest?

5) I am thinking of going to the Dells for a Duck or dinner cruise ride - sounds like a way to cool off while seeing beautiful WI scenery. (Any advice?)

Welcome to Wisconsin. Olbrich is well worth the visit and if you get to the Milwaukee area, Boerner Botanical Gardens would be worth it (as well as the Wisconsin State Fair). Daylilies, rudbeckia, echinacea, and hydrangea come to mind quickly as to what will be blooming.

Hi folks... I had a blast today at the swap. It was great fun to see so many long time friends and make some new gardening friends too. We had over 100 people and over 2000 plants for sharing. Awesome! At our first swap in 2001 there were 28 people... it's was so fun to see some of those same people at the swap today. Thanks to everyone for coming with such a kind and sharing heart - that's what it is all about. Everyone seemed to go home with lots of new plants. :-) Murray and I came home with some tomatoes, sedums, lillies, coneflowers and many more. Thanks so much. Of course, thanks to folks for bringing a wonderful array of tastey potluck food! I say this every year... gardeners sure can cook and bake. Thanks to folks that donated door prizes. We always get such a neat array of goodies to choose from One last thanks to everyone who came with a kind generosity of spirit. Good gardening to you all! Beverly

Claire - love your Halloween pumpkins. When we went on vacation, the squirrels made a feast of our pumpkins - we came home to a few little remnants on the front steps! I've had a busy month - so I'm posting all my October garden photos now. My tomatoes in October were fabulous! My best tomato year ever. Hydrangea Paniculata Tardiva has taken on the pinkish hue I vaguely recall getting a division of a chysanthemum about 4 years ago from an old neighbor. I had almost forgotten about it until it bloomed this year. And I seem to remember it being pink! Not the happiest plant, but at least it bloomed this year! Maybe there is hope for future years? Morning Glories have finally covered the brush pile with foliage and blossoms Brown Eyed Susans continue to put on a show Fall foliage. The tree in front is a red maple - this is the tree that was devastated by the winter moth caterpillar. This year it has colored yellow before turning red - it typically goes straight to red. (This photo was taken on the 24th). Behind the red maple is a silver maple with absolutely no color - just holding onto the green leaves. And finally - some snowliage photos from this past weekend.

Hi everyone, Well, as promised, here I am posting about what in the world I've been doing all summer while traveling to & fro Wisconsin. As some of you already know, I work with fish-eating birds: cormorants, pelicans, herons, egrets, gulls, wood storks, etc. My husband and I have been working in Wisconsin for the past 3 years, but we also regularly work in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Ontario, and a few other places. Yes, we are a husband + wife team, working together out of the same office. Many people are surprised that we work together, but it is great. We make a fantastic team, and are often at our best under challenging field conditions. Great minds think alike, and being dear friends & in love sure helps too. (ok, enough with the mushy stuff). So now for a few photos from the vegetation surveys we did this month. Background: We are working on remote islands in Lake Michigan, around the Door Co. Peninsula area. All the islands have nesting double-crested cormorants and herring gulls. Some also have nesting Am. white pelicans and Canada geese. Back in April, we put up some 6 ft x 6 ft pens (we call them exclosures) to exclude the cormorants because they damage vegetation with their nesting activities (too much POOP!). So then we went back in August to catalog everything that grew in the pens, by plant species, and weighed it to also determine biomass. That meant breaking out the field guides, studying up on botany and the flora of Wisconsin, and bringing the plant presses for species we couldn't identify on the island. We compareed the exclosure plots to some "control" plots, which had nothing but 4 wooden stakes at the corners. We had 45 plots to do on 3 islands, plus another 3 islands down by the city of Green Bay that we did simple vegetation surveys on (no pens). It was alot of work, but very interesting. The bottom line: there are lots of nonnative species on those islands, like motherwort, catnip, pigweed, common mallow, stinging nettle and sow thistle. The native vegetation was primarily lambsquarter and smartweed species. Almost done clipping this 1-meter plot: Looking for small plants beneath the lambsquarter The finished, sampled 1-meter subplot Who would even know what this was?!?! I saved seeds to winter sow and see if I can't figure it out. The very last veg plot to measure. You can tell, because we look so happy! A friend found crawling across the plant press The stinging nettle I hacked through to make us a nice trail to get to the center of the island. At least its not poison ivy! Ok, that's all for now. Hi everyone. Hope you are all keeping warm. I have to admit, we haven't even really seen winter at its worse, but already I am sick and tired of snow. I am seriously considering moving somewhere where there is no snow. I can always come back to visit. All the boxes are great. Love to hear what everyone has sent and the enthusiasm of the recipient. I agree Shirley, it's like Christmas. Speaking of christmas. My tree is still alive and going strong. I put it outside in the stand, of course the water is frozen solid and under a foot or two of snow. We strung berries and oranges and nuts, pinecones slathered in peanut butter and then rolled in seed, all over the tree. The birds are going insane to say the least. I haven't wintersowed a thing. i decided this year i'll just go out and sprinkle seeds everywhere. i was getting prepared but then we got hit with the first snow and then the next one and then the cold and then more snow...so i said the heck with it. It sure is another cold one tonight. I think we are going down to about 9 degrees. guess i'll take that as opposed to minus any degree. hoping i will be able to join in february's swap. love the simplicity of it, but then i can execute on that...that's what craps me up with swapping LOL just an issue i need to get over. well, that's it for now. i have an early morning tomorrow. be well everyone, stay warm and remember....Spring is on Monday, 21 March 2011...56 days, 19 hours remain. maryanne p.s. mellen, i would love that website/link as well.

Rotary gardens in Janesville is also very nice. About a 45 minute drive from Madison

In Madison the Allen Centennial garden at UW Madison is small but nice -- you can wonder over to the union on the lake for ice cream!

May I suggest going to Prairie Du Chien (Villa Louis for a nice historical site). Then go south along Mississippi River to Dubuque, IA (nice public garden there)& then back to Madison---can stop along way at Cornish lead mining museum at Pendarvis & Swiss Hist. Village at New Glarus (good Swiss restaurant & excellent brewery at New Glarus).

The suggestion by the previous post is a very good day trip. The Dubuque Arboretum is very nice. Also, Mineral Point on the way back from Dubuque to Madison is a nice small town with some older buildings converted to artsy type of shops. The southwest part of Wisconsin has alot of nice scenery.

Also, if you are based in Madison and want to go to Wisconsin Dells - hwy 12 through Baraboo is a nice drive alternate rather than the interstate. Just a warning Wisconsin Dells is fun but its the typical commerical tourist place if that's what you are into.

If you are based in Madison every Saturday morning there is a farmer's market on the Square which can be very entertaining. Also, on Wednesday, Aug 3 is the last concert on the Square in Madison which is a free concert at the Captial Square that starts at 7 -- but you should get there plenty early put out a blanket and relax with food and beverage.

P.S. I think the Wisconsin Forum becomes dead in May because we can finally get outside after being cooped up for 6 six months!

I second Olbrich Gardens and the Rotary gardens in Janesville. I just saw the Janesville gardens last year for the first time and was super impressed. The Domes in Milwaukee are okay. I would avoid State Fair. The Madison Farmer's Market is awesome. The Ducks are neat though be forewarned the whole Dells area is crazy tourist-y and very busy in summer. Every Wisconsin resident is required to go to House on the Rock once just to say they did it and then they inevitably ask themselves, "Can I have those hours of my life back?"

Fantastic advice, all! Thank you. I'll use them all!

(Dickiefickle, just a stereotype showing my own ignorance. When newscasters talk about heatwaves "up north" they remind us that northerners are not prepared for extensive heat, so can be deadly. We buy that out of sympathy even though they may not be referring to public places and accommodations. I'll let you know if I notice a difference after the trip! LOL!)

Irma, it's okay we also laugh at all you southeners who freak out when you get a flake of snow, or are wearing parkas when it's 50 degrees outside.

But, yes, do go to Olbrich and the Farmer's Market. (I, personally, would avoid the Dells like the plague, but I never wanted to go to Disney either, so ymmv.)

The southwest portion of the state is lovely. (It's called the Driftless Region - the glacier missed that part of the region many, many moons ago.) I would take a drive out towards Blue Mounds, then go to Mineral Point, and then swing up through Spring Green (you can stop by Taliesin) - it's just lovely country.

The only thing I can tout is the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Refuge. I live about 1/2 mile from it, so I know plently about it. It is basically a 33,000 acre wetlands, with about 300 species of birds to see, and very nice views. It can be overwhelming due to its size, but there are plenty of maps to guide you. I can tell you this though, every out-of-stater that asks and ends up going to the Horicon Marsh, is VERY happy they did so.

And yes, we have A/C here, plobably more so then people in the south. I dunno about my fellow Wisconsinites, but my air goes on when it hits 75 outside. I am a true northerner, in that I like cooler temperatures. I can agree though that our 5 month winters get old real fast.

Don't miss Cave of the Mounds, just west of Madison. They have nice grounds, too. And in Baraboo, there is the Inernational Crane Foundation and Circus World Museum.

Olbrich Gardens, House on the Rock, farmer's market,and State Fair are a must also.

Enjoy your trip. There's lots to do here.

Alas, I had to cancel coming to Wisconsin this summer. I will keep all your good advice and hope to come another year. I guess now I should ask if you recommend spring over fall - but I guess it depends if you like flowers (I do) or colored leaves better... so I guess it will be in spring/early summer. Thanks, again, for your help!
