My vinegar spray has killed the crabgrass - now what?
Comments (4)If you live where the summer heat has broken, you can seed any time. The best ways to prevent crabgrass are to 1. Never seed grass in the spring. If you have to seed grass in the spring, then expect to have crabgrass for one season only. 2. Come springtime, never treat your lawn like you were seeding it. This means leave your grass as long as you can stand it and only water once a week. Crabgrass seed needs daily watering to sprout; so does grass seed. Crabgrass seedling needs sunlight to grow once the seed sprouts; so do grass seedlings. If you plant grass in the fall, the crabgrass, being an annual, will not sprout. Planting grass in the fall gives it six months to mature the roots so your grass can survive the heat next summer. If you have tall grass, reasonably dense from lots of seed in the fall, then you should not have any problems with crabgrass next year. Just don't start daily watering next spring. Of course you have to deal with rain as it comes....See MoreVinegar as a weed killer
Comments (10)I've tried that Nature's Avenger Organic Herbicide and it works! It is a new patented citrus-oil based weed killer. I sprayed it on my driveway and around my fences and my dog runs. The next day all of the weeds were dead. And it smelled like oranges. Bizarre. check out their site naturesavenger.com. They are approved by the EPA, USDA National organic Program and OMRI. They seem legit and it worked. Side note: Called them about the soil thing. Here's what they had to say. Citrus oil dissipates really quickly and it doesn't affect the soil. You can replant within 4 hours of spraying. and since it dissipates so quickly my kids and dogs can't bring it into the house. Check it out. I think it's a better alternative to Vinegar....See MoreVinegar as a Weed Killer
Comments (13)Vinegar works just fine to kill weeds - you have to get it to the roots though, leaf application does nothing. I buy it by the 2 gallon jug and use an old dish soap bottle with the top that you pop up to aim it between bricks in a path as organic alternative to roundup. aprilwine - Maybe you are thinking of Ammonia - which is nearly all Nitrogen. Bleach has no nitrogen in it. The chemical forumula is NaClO - Sodium Hypochlorite. That N is Na for sodium. NaCLO is a strong oxidizer and a poison. See Wikipedia for an overview. As a sterilant, it will kill all living things in the soil its applied to, including all bacteria, earthworms, etc. But its really good for cleaning tools or if you have any fungal infections in the garden.. I wipe my clippers with dilute bleach between every cut on broadleaf evergreens. I don't know what the effect is if diluted 1:10 - but if the Chlorine moves off as a gas maybe it disintegrates quickly - don't know. Having poured bleach on red ant hills, I can tell you nothing grows there for years - it completely sterilizes the spot....See MoreVinegar to kill weeds, grass
Comments (9)One way to prevent over-spraying any kind of herbicide is to take an empty soda bottle with the bottom cut off and cap removed. Cover the weed with the bottle and spray it through the opening at the top. You can use plastic milk jugs if you have something larger to spray or the 20 oz. soda bottles for small weeds. For the nut sedge, I use dry molasses. TAMU has proven that molasses makes the roots stop growing. I used to have a good sized patch of nut sedge in my backyard and over the last few years have applied dry molasses and also use an organic fertilizer with molasses. Most of it has stopped growing out there. I have only seen two sprigs of it this year so far. Plus, it is much safer around pets and people....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
