What to do about uneven ceiling and stainless chimney hood?
Comments (16)As was said above. If it is a small amount I doubt anyone would notice. Ours is out the wall as yours is. Our chimney part does not actually touch the ceiling. Our ceiling is not level either. Since ours doesn't touch you can't tell that one side is slightly different than the other. edited for spelling This post was edited by debrak2008 on Tue, Sep 3, 13 at 16:05...See MoreRange Hood Help - in-line fantech but which hood?
Comments (21)In principle, any hood with an internal blower could be gutted of the blower and operated with an in-line or roof mounted blower. (GreenDesigns may have meant that using it while leaving the blower inside would be a poor plan.) I can imagine construction details that might cause non-optimal internal hood flow patterns, but I have no detailed knowledge of the internal construction of myriad hoods to know whether such are prevalent. There may be nanny jurisdictions that would claim that code approval of the hood was violated when it had its blower removed. Any hood available for order without a blower likely is fully compatible with an external blower. This, of course, can be confirmed with the manufacturer. The most important adaptation requirement is that the blower be continuously controllable, and that the hood control be a continuous motor control. A hood with just a few motor speed positions on a switch might require a compatibly-wired motor. While a multi-position hood control could in principle be replaced by a continuous control, par. 2 may apply. When I was doing my kitchen reno, I chose a compatible hood/roof blower combination (supplied by Wolf) because the entire scope of the project (gutting and reconstructing part of a house) made playing with the details of the blower circuit a side project of tertiary importance that I couldn't afford the time to deal with. As it happens, inside my Wolf (Independent) hood is a diac/triac motor control circuit, about the simplest design available that goes back to the '70s. The compatible Wolf (Broan) roof blower uses a typical induction motor that is easily controlled by this type of circuit. The cost versus time value trade-off needs to be considered when dealing with issues like this. kas...See MoreTile backsplash first or mount chimney style vent hood first
Comments (25)I'm getting ready to install the backsplash tile and it will be going up first then the rangehood and chimney. My reasoning, my sister remodeled and her GC installed her hood and then tile was applied up to the ceiling in a herringbone pattern, 2 months later the hood malfunctioned and research showed a defect in the electronics. The new hood that was selected didn't match the tile layout outline and the tile had to be taken down to just above the range, her nightmare continued when she learned the marble tile had been discontinued. I figure its easier to chip out the tiles containing the anchor mounting hardware and replace them, than a whole wall of marble tile. Having done many kitchen tile jobs if the wall is flat, the tile will be flat....See MoreWhy can't I decide on a vent hood style?
Comments (38)Oh no, no OTR microwave! Unless your kitchen is too small for a separate spot for it, OTR microwaves are very impractical. The venting is poor, they are set up too high, and their use interferes with anyone using the range. Regarding the 8 foot ceilings, you have 96". The vent hood height from the top of the cooktop to the bottom of the hood is specified in the installation instructions from the manufacturer. Let's say that it's 30". So adding the 30" space to the 36" counter top height, you have 66". If the hood is 18" that comes to 84" and you then have 12" left between the top of the hood and the ceiling. That's not enough for a storage cabinet but definitely enough for some sort of decorative top treatment. If the manufacturer specifies more or less than 30" then your space above the hood will increase or decrease. But you need to plan for that as you select your vent hood....See Morekaseki
