Backyard living space dilemma?
Comments (4)Your own interests and desires would be the primary determining factors as to what should be in your yard. Someone else could help you figure out what to build/install in order to best satisfy those wants and needs. It looks like you need a landscape designer or architect to help you with a master plan. If there is to be a roofed structure, you'll want to be cautious about its impeding views from the inside, or possibly limiting light to the inside of the house. It looks like there might be a subterranean entrance that connects with the patio...? Is the patio well used? It seems a bit distant from the grill area....See MoreDesign advice needed for Backyard Modern design with pond
Comments (8)Jamal, do not be discouraged by remarks that might sound negative. It's not that anyone is trying to discourage you, but that in order to make progress, we have to address what we see, and we might not understand it. You've got a partially done project, and I don't think we understand where you're trying to go yet ... though I will say you definitely have the modern vibe going on and many things about seem pleasant ... so far. If you have a plan on paper or computer, I'd submit that first and foremost, as it has the be best chance of clarifying your direction. If you don't have that yet, accept 10 lashes for building before the plan was worked out, :-), and create one now -- hand drawn and reasonably accurate is OK, and show us what you're trying to accomplish. If you don't know where you're trying to go, say that, and let get it figured out. (We'll need more information from you.) We have one view now. Also, it would be good if you move to the right and show us another view, transverse to the first one, so that we can get a better idea of the space....See MoreBackyard/Pool Design Dilemma
Comments (10)"Our building official says our retaining wall can be no higher than three feet and he wants us to get to 850 or below more quickly, although he hasn't defined for us exactly how quickly is necessary to meet the ordinance." Do you live in a community where other retaining walls are greater than 3 feet? I would explore under what conditions they are permissible. Usually, retaining walls greater than 3' need to be designed by a civil engineer. Since tolerances are tight,I would ask to be pointed to the specific code that specifies "how quickly" you must reach existing grade, so that there is no mystery and you know exactly what you're working. Sometimes, information "translated" by someone, even if they properly understand it, can be misinterpreted along the line. There is incentive to have the lowest retaining wall possible in that it will cost less and be less likely to have future problems....See MoreBackyard dilemma
Comments (1)That depends entirely on how you want to use the yard. Do you want to put out furniture and cook and entertain there? Do you want to put in a pool? Do you have children that need room to run and play ball and swing in a swing? Do you want to grow vegetables in a garden? Do you need to plan for fencing or trees for privacy from neighbors? These are all personal choices you have to make first - strangers on the internet can’t decide those things for you....See MoreEmbothrium
