Desktop Shortcuts

I have several shortcuts to various internet sites, such as Google, on my desktop and most of the shortcuts appear as plain white boxes with the site name underneath. I would prefer to have the logos of the sites appear either within or instead of the white boxes. Does anyone know how I can do this?

I'm not certain but I think the answer may be No.

You can see site icons if you make the bookmark bar visible in your browser and use that for quick access.

Go to the website and the home pg. of that website, try dragging the URL=address to your desktop, then you may get an icon. You may need to minimize the page to see your desktop and drag?

Maybe try making a new desktop shortcut with a path about like this; "C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop.scf" when done you may need to right click it and select properties and mark it to start in a path similar to this; "C:\Documents and Settings\mike\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" if it works, right click & delete the non working one, then drag the new onto that spot.

is this a game you have on your pc or a link to the actual website? if it is a game you have on the pc then go to the game itself in start all programs and right click on it and create shortcut and select desktop as the destination.

Shortcut for Windows XP Callendar. When you click start you have 2 columns. When you open and go to Microsoft Works Calendar Left click the Calendar and drag it over to the first column at the top. Close All Programs and now left click and drag the Calendar to your Desktop. That's your shortcut. As for the Reminder for your calendar it's located in Options in the Edit Tab. I didn't check any further.

I tried the suggestion above, it didn't work for me. I got a shortcut but the image was that of the browser, not the specific site.

There is a function "Change Icon" on the Properties for URL (and any other) desktop shortcuts. The browse dialog by default opens "Icon files" (.ico, .icl, .exe, and .dll) with "All Files" as an alternate choice.

Many websites are coded for a "favicon" that browsers recognize when saving a bookmark, which typically is a file favicon.ico on the hosting server. The trick is whether a favicon can be captured as a local .ico file to reference for changing the icon of a desktop shortcut.

If the file is in the root of the hosting server and not protected in some way, it can possibly be viewed directly by appending /favicon.ico to the root URL of the site ... then right-click on the displayed graphic to save it accordingly.

Example: www.gardenweb.com/favicon.ico (it works).

Alternately, I suppose someone who is artistic could design icons (with a bitmap graphics utility or whatever type of graphics software is appropriate) to create a local .ico files.
