Design Dilemma living room Windows

window dressing help please!

Hello designer friends!

I need some advice! We have a family room we love with a great W window & S sliders to a mini greenhouse room that need some covering... I want the light, but would live in a fish bowl if we left the windows uncovered (you can’t see, but through the W window is out lovely minivan in the driveway, no more than 10 feet away). I also think I want to add some fun (nothing formal) with the coverings but don’t want to date ourselves before beginning. We think we’ll also add top down/bottom honeycombs to get more natural light through the W window with privacy, so the curtains ultimately won’t need closing all the time.

In the room pics, on the left is what we have from previous owner that is too dark & depressing. On the right is a linen-ish light filtering white curtain that i just grabbed. It isn’t hung correctly by the grommet, but is there for effect. I like the light filtering but think it might look too much like a sheet. If it wouldn’t be outdated tomorrow or look too dressy, I like the white & black panels in the third pic, but not sure I love that they’d make the room cave-like when closed due to being blackout.

I would remove the trim that is making full length drapes a PITA to hang. A lighter color for the walls would be a huge improvemnt as far as light is concerned. Then add you blinds and then drapery panels that are full enough to be a ble to close and look good so at least 2.5 x wider than the rod . I like linen drapes but they need to be the right color of linen and I don’t see the point in the light filtering since you will have blinds to do that.I actually like solar shades for light and heat control and daytime privacy but keeping the view and then drapes that close at night for privacy.Some drapes like this with a darker trim along the bottom and sides might be nice.

Your giant crown moulding doesn't leave much room for drapery rods. If you do go for drapery panels, install rods as close to crown moulding as possible so you can get height for drapes. Extend rods wider than window so you don't get that strip of light on either end and also so the drapery panels arent covering window when they are open. Go for patterned fabric that includes navy, don't go for solid navy. Because you are really after privacy, I'd add blinds as well. I'd also lighten up wall colour so it's not same tone as your couch. One more thing, I'd pick one shade of white for your trim. Currently your door looks like a different white than the crown moulding. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I was afraid the answer would be no on the panels. I was thinking that *maybe* I could get away with putting a panels on the outside of each of the corners, but that would mean you'd have to move it out of the way to get in and out of the door. Not very practical. With such high ceilings I was really trying to bring some warmth and coziness to the room. Oh well...I'm sure there are other ways to accomplish this. I'd really like the change the fireplace to a stacked stone, but that's down on the list. Do you think the dark bamboo shade is a good choice or should I do maybe a white or cream roman shade, or even pattern of some sort? Thanks again!

Wow...are you sure a question like that doesn't require a site visit? Seriously, if you don't need coverings for practical reasons, don't bother as the room is beautiful. if those are single glazing, you might wish to have roller blinds fitted against the window and hidden by trim work painted to match the window trim. You would lose a few inches at the top but a talented trim carpenter could make them look almost like a part of the window trim. I could see custom made radiator covers that would mimic the wainscoting would turn those obstructions into a desirable feature. For the top use the same profile and dimensions, at the same height, as the window sills. Columns on the ends and probably three panels of approximately same proportions as the existing ones across the front of the radiators would work well. Do some research on radiator cover design as you need to have good air flow coming in from the bottom and exiting at the top and a properly designed cover will actually help, not hinder heat distribution from the radiators. Despite the term, more heat comes from convection than radiation and channeled air flow will increase the heat transferred to the room. 1st I would paint the blue wall in the DR the same color as the other walls. In DR I would hang panels on each window. Hang the rod 1/3 of the way down between the ceiling & window top. In the LR treat the 3 windows as one although I see that may be problem due to the TV placement. The panels should be wide enough to cover all 3 windows

I had to Google "Zebra Light Filtering Shade." Had no idea someone had come up with this design. If they cannot change your order, you will be able to use thei 100% Satifaction Guarantee after your order arrives (up to 30 days after delivery) if you do not like the zebra look. I would have decided on curtain panel color or pattern before ordering blinds.
