Does wood kitchen cabinets need to match dining sets?? HELP first time

Hey everyone we just bought our first home and I’m compromising with my husband on keeping the kitchen cabinets the same color. These are the dining sets I would like to purchase. The long table for the formal dining and the round table for the breakfast nook. Would it look weird since they don’t match the kitchen cabinets?? Im new to all this stuff lol. I want our first home to look good.

I have never experienced a kitchen table matching the cabinets. Typically people match the table to the decor. With the type of flooring you have, beachy/ rustic looking based off of the picture the tables you have picked out work well with that feel. The darkness of the tables also complement the darker veins in the counter top. If you wish to pull the red colors from the Kitchen Cabinets I would suggest bringing that rust color in to the place mats or maybe even the dishes.

After looking more closely at your photos, the problem you are going to run into are things like window and door trim. I can't tell if there is trim on the window in the yellow nook. Assuming there is, anything you put on top of the tile could end up too deep for the trim. Assuming there isn't and it is tiled to the window, you would have to figure out a way to trim out the window to hide the tile, then do your beadboard. I understand this is your first home and that you don't want to rip things out but, you don't want to make it worse than it is by kinda sorta fixing it. I would test removing the tile. If it comes off pretty cleanly, then I would remove all and skim coat to fix the walls. If not, I would remove both tile and plaster and drywall. It will be labor intensive, but better to do it right the first time and improve the home, than to do something that will only make it worse and possibly decrease the value.

Gray flooring is very trendy - which means it will become the dreaded "dated". While light gray as a neutral will always be useful, the extreme over use of gray will turn on itself - just as over use of oak did. If this was a cheap laminate gray floor with a limited lifespan - no big deal (except the waste in the landfill) but you had better love this expensive floor 10 years from now when the HGTV crowd will say "yuck - look at all that gray" - just like they say "Yuck, look at all that oak" now. If you will love it, go ahead. I have my oak kitchen which I like just fine. However, a natural wood floor will add color and will go with just about any style thrown at it. It is best if one applies the trendy colors to easily changed surfaces - like paint for walls, decor, curtains, upholstery and even a backsplash if it is not a huge expense. Listen to SJ - she is a flooring expert. The gray, gray rooms just looked washed out - especially when all the new design pics I am seeing are showing color.

Perhaps here isn't the best place for ideas when on a budget. In my world 25k is a HUGE amount for a kitchen update. But DH would do/did all our labor so I am bias. Leaving the lay out as is, I would look into replacing the door/drawer fronts. Chances are pretty good the cabinet bases you have are much sturdier and better built than anything new one would purchase. Materials have gotten much thinner, old growth wood is stronger etc. OLD IS BETTER from a construction point of view in most cases!! I love the windows in your kitchen. What does it look like from the outside? Yes the slider can be replaced by a french door combo where only the left side opens I DID IT I KNOW!. We did ours for energy efficiency and ease of opening. Remember the swing of the door is a space eater. Counter eating is all the rage but not great for little kids...where are you at with children and a dining room? We extended our counter top, it's easy to do. I agree you probably don't want to extend it in front of the glass but I bet the entire door can be made smaller but this will run into outside siding/painting costs...a french door and free standing counter top table may be least expensive easiest to do. It will be cheapest to find a french door the size of your present opening. A custom cabinet maker- could retro yours to accommodate a microwave but for the money putting one over the stove would be easiest, cheapest. They come with exhaust fans built in. Your lay out now looks very open, modern, new counter tops alone would change the look a lot!! Stand firm on your budget and resolve to freshen your space. Not everyone gets around to a full gutting of a kitchen!! Don't let what you hope to do be side tracked by things you can't/don't want to afford. In the end you don't get your money out of a full gut anyway!!!

There are many comprimises in a marriage that cabinet color would not be one I would make and they do not work with the flooring.at all. As for furnituer matching cabinets that is not IMO something I would do.

@patricia what color do you think we should paint them? I was thinking either white or a light powdery grey

rVarathane Kona might be a good option it still has some red undertones so it would be a warmer brown. Ebony would defiantly make it darker and be a bit more matchy/matchy with the table. Or you can throw caution to the wind and do a Weathered Gray- this one you would have to strip the cabinets to bare wood in order for it not to look weird.

Rustoleum has Dark Walnut that might be pretty as well and then again throwing caution to the wind there is a color called SunBleached which would be very similar to your flooring.

Minwax has a lot of mixable colors as well. The downfall to mixable is there is always room for error- meaning if you run out, even if they use the same formula there is a chance that it could be different one can to another.

what i would suggest is to figure out what wood species the cabinets are ( based off of the pictures I would guess Alder or Hickory, they seem to have a lot of variations in the tone)

and test out the colors in your kitchen.

IMO I would go darker- I think the darker colors like the Kona or maybe even an Espresso would really make the floor and the counter top POP!

And if you decide to paint them Prep work is key! From experience taking the extra time to prep the cabinets and make sure they are super clean before painting is the difference between wow and oh no!
