Area Rug over wall-to-wall carpeting???? Suggestions Please!
I have wall to wall carpeting in my 16'6"x 13'5" living room. I would much prefer to have a wooden floor but this is what we have and for the moment its practical and we wont be changing it right now (for insulation and soundproofing as we have a downstairs tenant).
I love the kind of Californian Boho style: white walls, lots of light colours with a few pops of colour, natural textures and wood accents. But its kind of hard to have that look with the kind of carpeting we have. I'm thinking about an area rug to ground our sitting area and cover the carpet a bit. I have been looking for a vintage oriental style rug but its hard to find one in the right size and colour that I can afford and maybe more neutral rug would be better?
any suggestions would be appreciated. Its a bit difficult to photograph room but the collage should give you an idea of our current carpet, we will be adding a few more pieces of furniture later (a wardrobe shelving etc).
so what do your think? should I keep hunting for the elusive affordable perfect oriental rug?
forget about an area rug all together?
get a neutral rug?
any suggestions on where I could get a decent rug on a budget?

Comments (3)I recently read somewhere on this forum that it's a no-no. I disagree. I have wall to wall in my family room in beige with a 5x7 area rug in the main open space of the rug. I love it and my DH is a floor TV watcher, so it's extra padding. It adds some dimension to my floor, IMO. Keep in mind, my area rug is subtle in design pattern so it accents the wall-2-wall nicely. My girlfriend, who is a re-designer, and has extremely great taste in decorating (her home could be in a magazine) and laying out rooms, also has an area rug over wall to wall. I've heard from designers they are best used on a diagonal with the one end leading you into the room. Mine is not down that way, but it works in our space. Comments (2)It may improve moving around on your chair, It's hard to tell how thick your carpet is; but I agree with RL Relocation LLC, it will have a "weird" effect on the over all look of the room. Just my opinion but if you are eventually going to have hardwood flooring, you will have an extra rug around unless you still plan to use it above the finished floor....See MoreArea rug over wall to wsll carpet in living room.
Comments (10)Yes here is the picture, In the same color. no eating or drinking , mainly conversational. So we r having four of these sofas. 2 on each of the facing walls. The cream 3 seater that I already have will go on the back wall. (we also considered keeping the cream sofas in the same spot as they r right now, and just putting two of these chocolate sofas on the opposite wall , or one chocolate 3 seater opposite cream 3 seater, and one chocolate 2 seater opposite the cream seater. My husband says it would look fine but I think they would look odd. ) no coffee tables , if I get space for end table I would, v small ones. Comments (19)I don't care for area rugs of any kind. I like an uninterrupted vision on a floor. Just my preference. Plus if you have nice floors why cover them up. I did have 2 in my last house (that is were I found out I don't like them) , but they never creeped, slithered, wormed, lollygaged or crawled anywhere. They did fly though, out the front door when I found out I don't like area rugs. Find a nice pattern and enjoy. You might find out you like the W/W carpet in the basement if you live in a cold weather climate. The floor is so much warmer....See More
