How do you guard counters against chipping when painting walls?
Comments (11)I had chux--the waterproof-on-one-side and absorbent-on-one-side things placed all over the marble counters in my parents' house. On top of the chux were multiple signs saying not to remove them. They were, nevertheless, removed every single day for various reasons. Sometimes, it was because the painters needed to paint the area of the cabinets adjacent to the counters. The metal parts of the paint rollers (that they placed directly on the marble) ended up making some small scratches. Moral of my story is to agree with Javachik...watch the painters while they paint!! Chicagoans tool belt/metal damaging marble advice is also great. Someone on this forum had a chunk of her marble hacked out by an errant tool belt. A guest at a party had a metal belt on that scratched our white marble all along the 2 edges of the island. My fabricator/cabinetmaker actually has custom belts made with no metal parts, and never wears a tool belt....See MoreHow do you like your peninsula or island bi-level counter height
Comments (7)We have very much what you are describing, a wood bar at bar height with granite on the rest of the counters. Our peninsula is open to the eating area/family room around a corner. I admit, this is one area that was about form over function. I liked the way it highlights the open corner and separates the family room from the kitchen. Plus it is in my primary prep and cooking area (range adjacent) and I was afraid I'd feel like I was cooking in the family room without it. It also hides my little prep sink. The 25" counter depth does not seem too small to me, but I have lots of room to spread out side to side. We've never been a family to eat at an island or peninsula, and we don't use it that way now. In fact, we still haven't gotten any stools and I'm not entirely sure we will because people seem to enjoy just leaning against it or we use it to set up buffet style - whether it is a large family meal, or just snacks/hors d'oeuvres for visitors. From kitchen side: From family room side...See MoreCutting down island w/ cooktop to counter-height - safety concerns?
Comments (18)You can most likely repurpose what's there, with a few fillers. (Just need to inventory cabinet sizes, etc.) Refrigerators are the least used of the main kitchen appliances dring actual food prep. Locating them on the perimeter out of the way of the main zone between sink and cooking allows them to serve dual usage as anchors of snack zones accessible to those not underfoot of the cook. It keeps people out of your hair. Yet, it's just steps from the island. Truem the island woud work better with a prep sink on it, but if you're on slab, that wouldn't be easy as it would with a crawlspace....See MorePantry and fridge wall - counter or no counter?
Comments (10)Your layout is difficult to read (too small & illegible), but here's a couple of comments Island seating...you have 5 seats lined up on only one side of the island - like ducks sitting in a row. This arrangement is not very conducive to conversation, it's more like eating at a diner counter with strangers. With this many seats, I would see if there's any way to have a seat or two on at least one of the sides. It may mean a shorter island, but if you have at least 42" of prep space on the non-Cleanup Zone side, you will have enough prep space. You need landing space for the refrigerator no more than 48" across an aisle. What would really help is if you could tell us a bit about you and your family and how you plan to use the Kitchen.
