Recommendations for window coverings in hot climate?

We have recently moved to Arizona. We are from a cold climate and are not familiar with the intense heat. We need window coverings that offer as much insulation from the heat as possible. Plantation shutters are an option but not sure they are energy efficient since they allow so much space between the shutter and the window to allow the heat to come in. We were told not to use real wood since the areas have afternoon sun and will warp quickly. Is there a good synthetic? I also like the look of top down bottom up shades. Someone has suggested window screens on the exterior southwest side of our home in addition to the coverings on the inside. I’m not sure how I feel about the screens. Concerned they will void the warranty on our new windows. Suggestions? Ideas?
