I have picked up so many plywood cabs w/ oak or maple frames it's wild. Orphan cabs are $5. Doors are $2. My beaded inset cabs (8) were a lot for me: $325. But the two, 24x42" glass cabinets paid for themselves. It would have cost me more to buy them new. I know. [nodding firmly] I've been shopping for years. Unfortunately, I couldn't sell this house and have anything left. I was left with $643,000 of debt in my name. I've had some amazing good fortune and a few things have been forgiven, but I'm still over $459,117.60 in debt. My credit has gone from a 730 to a 580 so another loan wouldn't happen. Plus, in post-fire condition without even finished electricity or plumbing? I believe the words for what I could get would be "diddly squat." Plus. Don't wanna sell. If I could get the bookshelves out of the laundry and onto the walls in the living room, I could put up all the cabs in the laundry. That would be two rooms up and done. Although I really believe I'm super woman, these suckers weigh a frikkin' ton. They're 58"w x 39"h and hung on cleats. Getting them down is one thing, hanging them again is another. But you're on target with me. That's what I really want to do. I also have a stack I'm returning because I've found better or changed what I wanted. I promise. jakabedy, I'm working with a clean slate. I can put walls where I want, nooks for books, etc. I am in love with the Not So Big House books and consider everything I'm building or reconfiguring to be furniture, even if it's stuck to the wall. I hadn't realized until just recently that although I don't like exterior MCM, inside I really do. The simplicity and lack of clutter really speaks to me. So I'm building in that direction. Seating I do have, but it's minimal and I don't want more. I never have company. Display at this point in my life is visual clutter. I love my huge library, but knick knacks go to Freecycle. Artwork fits easily into the picture. (Forgive the play on words.) I know I need a few personality items in order not to look like a cabinet display showroom, and I do have some things I love. Other stuff? Just looking for an opportunity to gracefully unload it. You should have seen the excitement on a lady's face when I Freecycled my brass candlestick collection to her. YEAH! Everyone's concerns are not just going in one ear and out the other. I really am paying attention to the ideas and cons presented here. That's why I wrote. As a matter of fact, I just sat down a few minutes ago and drew up the laundry room differently than I had been considering. Cool. Thanks all! :)

Having looked again at a bazillion Houzz kitchens and finished kitchens on Pinterest with the glass upper-uppers lit, and UCL, I'm noticing how much the color of the light affects the overall look. I've elected not to have my upper-uppers (which are glass on the range wall and half glass half solid on my refrig wall) not lit. I just recently learned about this stone for countertops. I actually thought that quartzite was the same as Silestone until very recently. My husband was interested in putting it in our kitchen. Can you tell me what you have been told about durability? Open shelving are great for photo shoots. They’re a terrible idea in reality. All the storage loss, the continual dust and visual clutter. Add another vote from me for removing the surrounds over the windows. And of course, scrubbing the uppers well before proceeding. You can take a door off and bring it in to be optically scanned for a color match. If you can afford a little work on the uppers, I would try a couple things. Find cabinetmaker who might be able to modify those doors by cutting down the trim around the doors and maybe applying a faux shaker trim to match. Also look into taking out the panels of at least a couple ad adding glass panes. Though I suspect that may start adding up to the same as replacements. No harm in discovery, though. You could keep the two tones, but I think I would paint to match (or even paint both a different color) despite the difference in doors. I would paint all the interiors bright white. If you take any doors off and leave shelves exposed or add glass, a colorful wallpaper or fabric in the backs would be pretty! Be sure to get the maker and style from the previous owner for future reference. A colorful backsplash will draw attention away from mismatched doors. Finally, change hardware for all to add cohesiveness. The knobs on the doors are visually awkward. They should all be pulls (get the same size as are already on the drawers) and they should be repositioned. Wood filler and touch up paint done well should disguise the poorly-placed knobs.
