Home organization - memo board in kitchen?
Comments (25)Rhome's reply to Studio got zapped by the backup restore. We don't have mudrooms, but I know what one is! It's the family entry, often at the back or service/utility side of the house, where wet and muddy outdoor clothes and shoes can be put off and hung to dry. Actual mud is one reason why it's generally near the laundry. Old days, small houses, it was pegs on a back porch. Current trends, it's a small room with a bench to sit for boot removal, and often cubbies and/or lockers for family members to not only hang up their coats in, but to organize backpacks and other take as you leave items. DH = Dear (or danged) Husband DW = Dear Wife The following are used with a numeral indicating birth order, or occasionally age: DS = Dear Son DD = Dear Daughter DS2 is dear second son. DD18 is Dear Daughter at 18 years old. MIL = mother in law B, F, S IL, Brother, Father, Sister in law...See MoreHelp with Kitchen Remodel to improve layout
Comments (23)I tweaked your space and did my best to meet space guidelines, but I don't know how feasible this is. The two big assumptions are that you'd move your laundry machines upstairs and that you'd change your formal dining room to a "study" like all the new build homes seem to have at the front of the house. I basically created an entry hall from the garage entry to the stairwell. mudroom lockers are recessed into the former formal dining room. Powder room is moved to the laundry room in as small a footprint as possible. I moved the back door to the present kitchen window and I assumed you could put a large new kitchen window on the patio wall with a clean up sink below. I was thinking the cabinet to the right of the clean up sink could be a pretty built in hutch-look unit. I think everything else is self explanatory. I hope this sparks more ideas......See MoreDesign conundrum -- can this kitchen be saved?
Comments (20)>>>It looks like one of those walls and doorways go to a hallway with more doors...is that correct? Yes, that door goes to the mud area and laundry, which I would like to combine into one large space, but that's a whole 'nother thread. There is one 36" passage into the family room which I would widen massively by removing those high, glass-fronted cabs and the pass-through counter beneath. One door into the dining room. And opposite that, in the back of the kitchen, unseen, is a door into the sunroom/office. No way to get rid of that one, either. I believe I am stuck with all the doors. For good or ill, this kitchen is definitely the heart of the home. Though I would definitely change the swing on that door to the dining room. Or remove it. >>>Is there a corner pantry also? I believe it is actually rectangular inside, but I did not open it. Honestly, I was so dejected by all that needed to be done, I sort of emotionally shut down too soon. When we drove up, it was pouring rain, and water was puddling 3" deep against the front steps and running down the porch's light fixture due to (one assumes) a bad roof. Matters did not improve inside. But in hindsight, I realize the house has tremendously good bones. I am trying to decide if I am up to the challenge before driving our realtor crazy running back and forth. This is so hard. We desperately love our current home. Every room is perfect. Our neighbors are perfect. But we are not in the ideal location for our retirement years, and we have no downstairs bedroom for my mother (or, eventually, for us) and no place to add one due to restrictive covenants. Still, these are first world problems, for sure. That is important to remember. Thanks, everyone, for your views....See MorePlease help me modernize this kitchen
Comments (17)Definitely remove the island. It's so small and it looks you bump into it every now and then. If you want a more current look, choose light colored cabinets with height that will go all away to the ceiling for more storage and to avoid all the clutter on the upper cabinets. Consider glass fronts on some of the upper cabinets or open shelving. Backsplash shelves and storage wall cabinets will be big this year so you may want to consider them too. Choose light marble-like quartz for countertops and light marble backsplash. You may even decide to apply quartz to your countertops and backsplash -- this can look really lovely. Single-level island will provide more current look but then you won't be able to hide the sink, so just do what is best for you....See MoreMomofthree Ma
