New home build...furniture layout...electrical outlets layout
Comments (11)Oh boy, I know what you mean. We had to decide this really early, because the power comes through the slab, so the floor receptacle outlet was "final" very early in the game. We did what others have recommended and now that we have furniture in the room, it seems like we got it right. But then when we get a rug, the cord will have to go across it a short distance and then down. I think it will be under the couch or end table at that point, and I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it's one of those stressful things, so I sympathize....See MoreDesign choices/trends for new houses, Parade of Homes observations
Comments (19)Regarding a pocket office--- In my previous home, I had a big office space, but because it was upstairs, I went up there only when I was writing or editing for hours at a time. The day-to-day stuff was downstairs. Now, my office is my favorite new piece of furniture that is at one end of my long, narrow living room. I bought a secretary/desk from Arhaus where the inside space is large enough for me to connect my large monitor when I need to edit. I bought an adjustable leather stool, rather than a chair because it forces me to sit correctly when writing. The bottom area locks, has a file drawer and a printer shelf. Everything I need in one place! I also have an antique pie safe (with glass doors) that belonged to my grandfather. It is coincidentally the same height and width as the secretary. It's at that end of the room, too and I use it as a bookcase....See MoreBrand New House with Clashing Designs and Poor Layout
Comments (147)Jumping around like a jack rabbit is right. Just a lot of things going on. Not sure if I mentioned yet that I'm actually in my last semester of college finishing up 2 degrees. It's been a hectic time handling my last class (basically finished in 3.5 years aside from 1 class that was only available in spring) and having to work double what I had been doing to cover expenses. The roommates I'm looking to get can't move til the semester is over, so it'd be like June 1st. But, back to the main question. The house stuff. What bugs me most entirely about the house? I would say it's the lack of a view to the front and back yard (as well as a sense of a door to the backyard). That's why I'm so stuck on the addition idea. It would really improve the appearance, lessen that trailer park look, and split off the yard to have a front and back. But as mentioned, that may not bring the return value in the end. The neighborhood is new and developing. I dont think adding it would be too far above my neighbors. There's a few houses I'd say are a quite a bit nicer. I think the oldest house in the area is like 2001? But this suburb is currently only 4 streets wide and about 20 houses long. Only 2 streets are full. If anything the addition might actually make my house fit better to the houses on either side of me. Ive briefly asked a contractor or two about the idea and I was getting numbers less than I actually expect. Between $10K and 15K. Which in my position is quite a lot, but I just would've expected between 25K and 30K? While I do love the idea of a pergola or a patio out front (or the side technically), I still wanted that sense of a front and back door walk out from a living room feel. Again, I know I'm stubborn and I've got a lot of ideas beyond my financial capacity until I get into a solid job, but spitting ideas back and forth actually is enlightening and helpful....See MoreHelp us with layout & design of new home office (please)!
Comments (11)Thanks decoenthuasiaste! I think we will follow your advice and position the desk that way. This way I'll have the window to my left and can look into the backyard if I want, and also face the large wall where we can place a nice long & short bookcase with art. I think the reading area to my right (on wall that current has guitar and standing lamp) will look great. We are going to try a rug like this one to complement the more modern bamboo desk top and dark navy walls:...See MoreSmall Town Friendly
