I would not match them. I think some contrast will look better. You will need to try different stains to see what complements your planned floor stain. If you cannot find a combo that works, maybe the floor needs to change.

Steve Hsu , a similar color but not a match is very common. Do you have a picture of the kitchen you can share? What kind of Oak floors are you using?

rantontoo - Yes the floor will look almost exactly like that in the picture you have attached. The trim color will be Alabaster.

Oak & Broad - I do not have a picture of the picture as the house is still in framing stage. Oak floor will be solid nailed down red oak 2 1/4. Thanks!

Sabrina - We are hard on our kitchen and our current house have paint grade cabinets in kitchen. They are pretty chipped up on the ones that are often used and because of that we have decided to go with stain grade wood like rift white oak so it'll be more forgiving. Unfortunately, mix and match won't be a choice for us. Thanks!

Something like my custom color stain from a local shop might work since it is a brown/grey blend. With that said, I might find an all wood kitchen with that stain too overall dark. I paired the stained alder lowers with White Dove cabs. Unfortunately, I had to marry my choices with existing oak trim and did not want orangish stained cabs. Maybe try both a lighter and darker grey/brown combo???

I would go with 2 shades lighter or darker on the floor when compared to the cabinets. Different enough that it looks intentional (and not like you tried to match but failed) and it would give some contrast. I like lighter floors but mainly because I have light colored dogs and a dark floor shows every hair they shed.

Thank everyone for their replies so far. I just found out we are limited to Duraseal stains. Since our floor will be 50/50 classic gray/weathered oak. I am thinking to go either 100% weathered oak or 100% classic gray on the rift oak cabinets. I can't seem to find any pictures online for how they would look like. Anyone got any photos by any chance? Thanks!

Do you have to do oak with oak? It is going to look very 80s with all that grain. You can't find any pictures online because that is not really a good style right now.

I personally don't like that much wood on wood, but if you won't do paint (a lot of paint can be durable) why not do Maple or Alder for the cabinets.? Then go very dark or very light with the stain to contrast the floors.

Buy sample cans of different Minwax stains (same co. as duraseal), rift lumber, and a can of satin top coating. Make some samples. You might want to try provincial also. My cab maker does not like to work with Minwax; but once I found what I liked, he had it stain matched at a professional paint/stain supplier.

Wood on wood is fine, but they need to compliment each other, not "match".

Don't match, pull a contrasting color from the floor onto the cabinets. If the floor is lighter white washed I would pull a darker gray/warm brown onto the cabinets.

Your kitchen sounds lovely! I am using quartersawn white oak on my cabinets and I think you will love the rift sawn (I was torn between QS and rift sawn, both are beautiful and so different from the oak cabs I took out).

With your floors being red oak, they are trying to pull warmer/redder. Are your cabinets red or white oak? I lean toward weathered oak stain because I like the warmth it gives. Your floors are likely plain sawn and just the cabs are rift sawn? That will impact how the stain looks as well. Maybe a 90% weathered with 10% gray would be a good mix?

Steve Hsu , can you see what the cost difference would be for White Oak? As was mentioned the Red Oak can look very 80's. Most new custom homes use White Oak. Its much easier to stain without all the reds and pinks to contend with. To many people it will also look less grainy.

The rift oak cabinets will be in white oak but the flooring will be red oak. I am really ok with the oak on oak look. Alder is not an option because it is way too soft. We are super hard on our kitchen. I totally understand there are durable painted cabinets however, the builder I am using will be using MDF and is pretty much limited to their painter to stain or paint the cabinets which also limits what they use as far as stain and paint.

Funny thing is my current house has the wide plank white oak flooring, but I am kind of over that look. Guess it is one of those been there done that thing.

No, they don't have to match. You can choose whatever you like best. Contrasts can also look great. It all depends on what kind of look you want to achieve and what are your further plans with the kitchen (what kind of countertops, backsplash, and decoration you will use). Keep in mind the big picture of how your kitchen should look like in the end before you decide.
