The living room trim doesn't look random because that trim is throughout the main level except for the master bedroom. The oak is what seems random to me because it's only there in the hallway, though in multiple areas (banister, wood column that's hiding an old chimney, and built-in shelves next to the column. The door stain is kind of random also. The whole has random elements because the previous owners really went to town with "upgrades", but they choose a lot of different finishes, so the main living area has four different wood colors between the door stain, walnut trim, the oak, and hickory cabinets in the kitchen. Maybe I can stain the oak to match the walnut trim at some point. I don't think the entryway shelves will look cluttered because there will be baskets on all of them to hold shoes etc. DH didn't want cupboards, and the kids would probably break doors on them anyway. It's hard to figure out what will eventually go and what won't. There's a whole lot that I'd like to replace/redo, but DH doesn't really want to do any of it, so... I'm leaning toward keeping the beadboard but painting it the wall color. I had a designer come today and she said beadboard would look ok if it was painted the wall color. Also, the dining room, which is visible from the entryway, has a narrow strip type of wainscoting that is reminiscent of beadboard, though stained walnut color, so I don't think it will look too out of place.

Is anything else going to change or just the trim? Linoleum changing, etc. There's a ton of wood here and some of it should be painted as well. For instance, you can leave the stair railing honey colored, but the spindles should be white. You can paint the wall paneling and trim a creamy white and leave the wooden ceiling. The linoleum flooring should be changed and the cobalt blue has to go. I'd also switch out the light fixture.

It looks like you have beautiful wood doors, door trim and beams. Don't know what you have around the windows (not pictured). Looks like the stairs could use a bit of TLC. If I were you I would not be in a hurry to paint or refinish the wood. First year in the home should be figuring out what works, doesn't work, how the home functions and where to sink your money. Prime your walls - live with them for a bit and decide if you really want white walls. I know all the pictures on the internet today are white rooms, but they also have studio lighting. Not all homes look good with all white walls. White needs lots of light to really shine. Often a light neutral color looks better than white if you don't have giant windows, skylights or other great lighting. My last home had between 6 and 16 linear feet of windows in each room - natural daylight galore and I had white walls. My current home has more normal sized windows in most rooms and I am painting the walls that were white to something more appropriate for the amount of light. The white just isn't pretty with out sufficient light. With the walls all primed you can look at flooring and paint and make a better decision on what works best in your new home.

Hi Debbie - it looks like a lovely home! My approach to mixing wood grains is to let just one show off its grain pattern. The adjacent wood plays a back-up roll with subtle graining in a contrasting color. That way they don't fight each other. This is a lot easier to do when you can choose the type of wood itself. In your situation, I would most likely match the floor to the dark stain of the double oven cabinets. That may be way darker than you're thinking! The dark stain would knock down the visible graining of the floor. You might see if you can grab some samples of engineers wood floors in different stain colors to see how it looks with trim. You might consider painting the medium-stained kitchen cabinets to cut down on the number of wood grains competing in the space. Hope that helps! Best of luck with the project. Doug
