Buckeye re-potting - Trees in Containers (pics)
Comments (26)Howdy, friends and fellow growers! This season, the Buckeye leafed out in the safety of the fenced area on the northeast side of the house, which the Buckeye prefer. The tree on the left, in a gritty mix, is fuller and has more compact leaves that are visibly reduced in size. The tree on the right was more heavily browsed by the deer, is in a bark-based mix close to the 5-1-1, and wasn't root-pruned or re-potted last year. All in all, I'm happy....See MoreHelp with House Plants: Repot? Pot-Up?
Comments (46)I have some questions on same topic if I may; new to this forum, I spent last 4 days reading Al's extremely interesting/educational posts on container growing/soil/water retention etc. I will ask questions about 1 plant at the time (it may take forever since I have about 58 right now inside & they all need help). I just realized that I have tortured my potted plants & am very grateful that so many have survived for so long. I have 2 olive trees, do not have name since they were given to me (1.5yr ago)potted in 6"pots by friend who just divided/chopped off shoots from their original olive (brought abt.45yrs ago from Italy!). they keep it potted in regular potting soil&only advise I got is "do not water too often". I would think that they would do much better in Al's mixes-not sure if 511 or gritty. Do not know anything about olives.(They may be candidates for bonsai? I do not know anything about bonsai). They are growing in spite of present conditions(heavy soil). Planted in 7&8"pots respectively, 53&55"tall.(Don't know how to post pics). If Al or anyone else can give suggestions, will greatly appreciate. I am in Toronto & they are overwintering inside(warm&sunny-65-70*,south window-during day, abt.55*nights). Thank you. Comments (12)I think if your plant is so root bound you feel it needs to be repotted, then do it. I’ve repotted all of my orchids (I have to phal, a zygopetalum and a beallara) when they were blooming and they didn’t miss a beat. It’s in how you handle them when repotting. Be careful of the leaves, don’t break roots, etc. I hold the plant in one hand while repotting- i don’t set the plant down unless it’s in a stable pot so that doesn’t tip over and allow the plant to hit the ground. Prep work is important. Get all set up beforehand so you don’t have to stop during repot. But if you do have to stop to get something, make sure you have a temporary landing spot set up for the orchid where it’ll be safe from mechanical damage (tipping, bumping things, etc). And have fun during the repot. You’re helping a plant have future (healthy) blooms that you can enjoy!! PS Jersey Girl- while I don’t like sphagnum as a potting medium that I would add, one of my orchids came packed in sphagnum. It’s doing well, but I wouldn’t wait too long to repot in a bark mix. I waited almost too long, and the roots were rubbery feeling. It was close to the edge of thinking about rotting. A little sphagnum is ok, not a lot for long term- like in your photo....See MoreBlooms drying up and dying before bloom
Comments (8)I am in east Texas, about 3 hours from you. I have some Knockouts in several colors and cut them back severely in February - they get so big I have to do this. Just trim them back, water them, mulch them and they will most likely start showing you some new growth. These really are good roses for beginners.....I don't have any blackspot issues with mine. Other than the compost, was the soil good that you planted them in? Maybe the fertilizer you used might have burned them - watering will help leach it out. If leaves are a light green, possibly with the veins showing, get an iron product from Lowes [forget the name of it but think it might be Ironite] and mix in water and water it in. I have a few plants that do this and one watering with the iron is all it takes to green them up. Mulching will help - we haven't had any rain either - make sure you are getting the roots watered. Maybe leave a hose on them for 15-20 minutes going very slow. You might think you are watering well when the water is actually running off and not getting to the roots. I hand water a lot and I will water one group, then another and come back to the first group [and so on] to make sure there is adequate water getting to the root zone. If they are planted getting the hot west sun, it might be a little hot for newly planted roses. Just keep them watered and mulched. Good luck - you will get the hang of it. I am no expert but have grown [and killed] enough roses to have finally figured out what they like. Oh, and Home Depot usually has some good deals on mulch...... Judith...See Moredbarron
