small, awkward living room layout help.
I'm about to attempt changing up my living room.. I'm selling/donating most of the furniture and I would like ideas on ways I can place everything. I will be keeping the white dresser/tv, the wood coffee table, side table with the plant on it (corner), both lamps (hanging and table), and of course the sheltie! My living room is somewhat of an awkward layout so I'm at a loss of what I can do aside from what it is now. The last picture is the best I could get for the floor plan.. across from the french doors is a small entry way, the top left door opening is to an eat-in kitchen, bottom left is the master bedroom, and the bottom right is an opening to two bedrooms and a bathroom.
Any help, thoughts, or opinions are greatly appreciated!

What colors and what style do you prefer?
Would you like something blue with a colorful/patterned rug,
or maybe something like this?

what is this room mainly used for?I like your dresser/tv area, but could you please lower the flower picture 6"-8" ? It's too high
I feel like I want to center the tv over the cabinet by moving it to the left. Or, stick something tall on the right side of the dresser.

Comments (16)This suggestion is kind of taste-specific and might not be your style at all, but I'll share my thoughts... What about this long, lounge-y leather sofa from Article that Chris and Julia put in their cabin? This kind of sectional that's more like a sofa+chaise won't take up too much room in the narrow space between stairs and kitchen. https://www.chrislovesjulia.com/2018/01/sectional-frame-article-sofa.html With the floating stairs behind, I think you need something with simple lines, heft and no legs. The room could probably get cluttered looking very easily with those stairs, so my inclination is very minimalist furnishings. If you must have a TV in this space, I'd put it on the wall opposite the fireplace so at least you can view it from the kitchen. You could put a swivel chair to the left of the sofa so one could spin and see the fireplace. Personally, I don't think I'd worry about making the fireplace a "focal point." The sofa with the pretty stairs behind is a more important focal point, IMO, because it's what you see most prominently from the foyer, the kitchen and the dining room. But, I don't think this is necessary with your layout.as grover mentioned, play around with what you have and see what looks best.
In the meantime, pick a sofa and an area rug that you want. Then you can build off of that.
right now everything in there is so neutral. Look at these rooms I've posted below. Some have a bold color velvet sofa, and some have a bit more leather and black/white. You say you don't know how to do color. So pick a color that you like and work it into an area rug, artwork, pillows and / or the sofa.
the rich navy blue velvet is gorgeous with gray, wood flooring and other neutral textiles and camel colored leather
so is a deep, forest green
this one is pretty neutral except for the rug. every thing else is minimal and neutral
This would look so nice w/your wood flooring, the warm colors in the rug, wood slat table, linen-type sofa, leather poufs would also work here. and notice the art work. It all just works together
