Need advice for Octagon and Dot tile grout!
Comments (24)Bill, You have been so helpful. This is a true tile job that has been a disaster. First, the wrong tile was installed in February (after being told before it started). Second, the thinset was not removed from the first job and the floor cracked all underneath the tile laid again in March. The correction to the second job did not come until July. They could not fit us into their schedule. They did not use the grout requested by us, refused to put in the expansion joint when questioned and said it did not need one. Lastly, the grout dried completely uneven in color, not to mention being poorly laid out in the division of lines. A salesman came to look at the job today and said they would grout on top of the tile. Is that normal? I am so sick of this project!!! We have been without this second bath except for a sink since Februrary 3rd. Surely this can not be normal for a tile job. Strangely, they act like everything is normal. I feel like we need to get someone out to look at this job before we accept what has been done. However, it is apparent they are incapable of doing a normal tile job....See MoreFloor 2 be grouted tomorrow...he doesn't want to grout under cabs
Comments (11)Just a quick comment. We kept the same ceramic tiles that had been down for 40 years. We liked them and they are no longer available. We only had 24 - 12" octagons left from the original purchase. Daniel, our miracle tile guy, added the tiles for the 2 ft. of additional floor space we needed and he made it with one left over. There was some slight color mismatch between the tiles that had been down and the tiles that had been in a box, but he matched the old grout perfectly. I agree that the GC should do it now for all of the above stated reasons, but, just in case, the grout can probably be matched pretty well. Also, keep any extra tiles for later, just in case. The tiles toward the front of the picture toward the carpet are new....See MoreMisalignment of Tiling
Comments (19)Snookum Isn't that the way of goes?? lol Tile guy blames carpet guy Carpet guy blames framer Framer blames block layers etc etc..lol ============ Open the photo in a new tab/window. Press and hold CTRL and press + to inlarge the photo as large as possible. If you look closely the carpet is correct. The tile is correct. The gap between the two is actually fairly even from top to bottom. The photo gives the illusion that the top is much wider. Even this photo shows it very clearly. Honestly to me. It looks like a simple tile layers mistake. To me it appears as if they started at the back wall and worked out toward the carpet. A simple string and two push pins would have prevented the gap altogether. A small string tied to the pin of a push pin and pressed into the outside wall (carpet side) at the door end and stretched tightly to the mirror end outside wall. take the measurements from the string to the back wall (shoes). Then start laying the tile from the carpet back. If a gap shows when you reach the back wall. All trimming would have been less noticeable or hidden by trim, cabinets etc. But to late now. Best thing to do is simply trim (cut to width) the seven pieces and lay them. The transition piece will hide most of it....See MoreContractor says caulk, don't groutb/t floor tiles due to sitting water
Comments (45)OP here. Haven't had a chance to read all of the comments--work 2 full-time jobs and am stealing a few moments from day-job 1.. But just got off the phone with a member of the tile association referenced by CT and they said to do the same test he said to do from get-go so will do that when I get off of work. My electrician "friend" is picking me up so I'll have to go on the down-low, lol. Sophie, you are on-point and Joseph--more power to ya! On a serious note, water isn't visibly coming down--but it's an old house with layers of plaster so may be taking its time. When water was coming down, I smeared some pre-made grout along cracks in the grout b/t wall and floor and water stopped. Been about a month or 2. I started this post b/c I noticed that ceiling's plaster was cracking more and spreading more and a piece of plaster fell down so thought problem was starting up again or had never been fixed with the premade grout. I have more time tomorrow to devote to this so that is when I'll read over everything carefully and pull out the contracts. Really, really appreciate all of you. No longer feel alone....See MoreRelated Professionals
