Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings movies, was asked by a commission created by the government of the UK to create a documentary to commemorate the 100 years since the start of World War I. Jackson and his team restored footage held by the Imperial War Museum and audio from the BBC to develop this amazing movie. The film's approach is from the point of view of British men who joined the army when war was declared, through Armistice Day and the return home.

In a post-credits short, Jackson notes that there were other stories that could have been told, including the efforts of women, but that he felt the need to focus the film in one area. The short also describes the restoration techniques.

It went into wide release last weekend. I saw it in 3D, and it was a great experience. Highly recommended.
