Temperate plants should be grown outdoors whenever possible. Tropical plants can be grown indoors if you can provide enough light and proper conditions for them. Their really is no secret to growing North American CPs indoors. You just have to bring the sun in and provide the best approximation of their natural environment as you can. They really should only be grown indoors if outdoors growing is completely out of the question, like a bad apartment where horrible neigbors will kill the plants out of spite, or a region where it is too hot, too cold, or provides inconsistent weather. Tips for indoor growing of Venus Flytraps and Sarracenias include: 1: The brightest window you have with 6000-12000 lumens of florescent light to make up for some of the lost sun. 2: Open pots to increase air flow and reduce mold. 3: Timing of florescent light to provide seasonal changes to give the plants dormancy cues. Stepping the light down by one hour per week in November to 8 hours a day and stepping it up in February back to 12+ hours a day helps keep the plants in synch and allows them to go to sleep at the right time and wake up the following year. Of course, mineral free water all the time and pest/fungus control should be provided as needed.

Couldnt find a decent ventless that didnt look tacky. The 50” napoleon luxuria model was about 4x as expensive as other models we were looking at. And we didnt like the fireplace installers and our contractors didnt know how to read framing instructions. It was a massive uphill battle. But finally have it up. Think it looks great but without an internal blower system its more for show than for heat and doesnt heat the outdoors. (Dont get the wrought iron balls, the metal is brittle and sheds everywhere in the unit as it breaks off with the heat)

Palimpsest, my guess is that the scooping is only possible if we can get the crank housing off (many indicate that it is possible, but I can't quickly figure out how to do it). The window piece should be able to slide straight in; in that case, then we put the housing back on and it sits in the scoop recess. I'll give Soft-Lite a call to find out if they have an alternate housing. We have about 2 weeks before the correct plywood sink base comes in, so the soapstone templaters won't be out until after then. Brickeye, good point on the outlets. The window isn't much wider than the sink base, and plugmold starts within a few inches under both adjacent cabs, so we're good on that front. Weissman, I guess my meaning wasn't clear. DH gave me the green light for the already expensive garden window, so an extra $1K for Okna would be pushing the limits there! This is our only kitchen window, and I do really want the ventilation that the side-lites provide.

I have had some plants out for almost two weeks. With all the cloudy weather we have been having, I just put them outside in a wind protected corner and let nature do its thing...didn't even sunburn. After acclimation to bright non-filtered sunlight, move them farther every three or four days toward full sunlight. Then plant them.
