Wood or stainless range hood?

I'm putting white shaker cabinets in my kitchen. The range will be 30" with a 36" hood. I'm undecided between a stainless hood and wooden hood cover with insert. Can anyone enlighten me on the pros and cons of each? Will the wood be harder/easier to keep clean than stainless? I don't do a lot of cooking and very rarely would fry anything greasy. Thanks for your input.

You don't do a lot of cooking, so don't really have to consider grease splatter and what repeating cleaning might do to the wood, so I'd say put in whichever you like and works well in your kitchen. Think about your other appliances - if they're white and you put in white hood cover, is it too much white? If they're stainless, would it bother you not to have everything matching. I don't think you can go wrong with stainless with white, but really it's personal taste and what's going to look the best with what you already have.

They will each give you a different look to your space. That is the thing I would think about. If you put in a good quality hood and use it EVERY time you cook, it will help keep the area clean. The problem in most places is that people don't use their hoods all the time.

Thanks, This "collage" approach got me in trouble in the master bathroom I finished off, was rough plumbed by builder, but not finished. I put in an off white tub, a stand along shower in gloss white, all behind the shower door, and a white sink. I figured I could put in a red toilet if I was so moved. My wife disagreed - the toilet is white too and I am supposed to someday replace the off white tub, but haven't.. yes tub is set in a low-boy (not a show too) white tile that matches the stand alone shower. I also installed a 3' (or thereabout) high wainscot in natural wood, stained Minwax Early American with a dash of Mahogany - and wall paper above. I'm now under pressure to paint the wainscot white semigloss. In the case of the kitchen a neighbor suggested Stainless steel and my wife liked the idea.. but burned once make me want to get some input. Thanks again, I am moved one step closer to stainless steel.

A custom hood from anywhere USA usually IS fairly priced. Because it is custom. If a company has "cornered the market" there may be a GOOD reason for that as well, such as skill and execution, quality, and creativity. Be happy and pay..or be oh- so -sad. Right? : ) Dang!!!

The Building Code reference was to the makeup air that may be required for your hood exhaust. A hood exhaust above 400 cfms (in some locales might be 300 cfms) could risk the exhaust pulling carbon monoxide through the house when it exhausts the air over your cooktop. That is why makeup air has become a Building Code requirement. The hood needs to be 6" wider than your cooktop, i.e. 42" wide. The "dissimilar materials" issue you mentioned is irrelevant. Millions of hoods everywhere that are next to wood or painted cabinets. As @Patricia Colwell mentioned, ixnay on the uneven cabinet heights. Make them all the same height. With your 10' ceiling, I'd go no shorter than 42" tall upper cabinets, instead of the 36" cabinets you show. The 42" cabinets will both add more storage space, and make the gap to your 10' ceiling not appear so yawning. Then choose the height for the cabinet over the refrigerator to match the height of the other cabinets. Is that fridge next to a wall? If so, make sure there is enough filler that the fridge door can open all the way.
