How does everyone's vintage order look?
Comments (28)I was in California when my order arrived. My husband unpacked them (sort of), doused them with water, then bunged them in the dark laundry room. I arrived a week later and took a couple three more days to pot them up. All are nicely bouncing back--all have thrown out lots of leaves, and I even got a few blooms, too. I can't keep them in pots too many weeks here, because they will need time to root in the ground before our inevitable winter sets in. I got quite teary. I just discovered old roses three years ago. Now our huge asset out West is closed. Sometimes in the intervening days, I torture myself by getting out Gregg's sumptuous catalog, and mewling over all I will never have. Comments (11)I too am new to all this and struggling to learn what needs to be learned for this to work. My biggest challenge is that some of my plants don't look good (I'd say 6-8 of my 28 are in some level of disrepair or desperation), and I *know* they don't look good, but I don't have the ability yet to look at a plant and based on its condition say "Ah, yes, bugs." or "Needs fertilizer" or "too much water" or "too little water". Man, it'd be so great if there was one site with pics of each problematic condition a pepper could have. I had aphid infestation, and I got rid of those, but then it rained every day for a month, and the damage looks similar...LOL Anyway, like you I was getting lost and overwhelmed by the whole fertilizer thing. Then a guy who works at a very successful and major nursery here (DeBaggios) said, just use TomatoTone, period. at transplant time and then once every three weeks, another tablespoon full in a circle around each plant. Seems pretty easy. I guess we'll find out if it works....See MoreMy kitchen is starting to look like a kitchen!
Comments (35)We're on our 4th day of painting and it's going well! Friday I painted alone and got the white samples up on the wall, 2 coats on the ceiling, and pulled the hardware from the cabinet doors. Not too shabby given my 7 month old decided she wasn't allowing anyone else to touch her except me...and she broke through 2 teeth this weekend so her neediness was way above normal. Saturday hubby and I got primer on all the cabinets and most of the white (we chose BM Dove White) on the walls and trim. Sunday was my first experience with plastering. There were a few places my contractor couldn't get to before I ran out of funds so I took that job on. With some sanding it should look just fine. Then the first coat of paint on the doors and drawers and started on the cabinet boxes. Today I have both kids by myself so I was able to finish the first coat on the doors and drawers and hope to get the second and final coat started this afternoon. I'm loving the red and had to keep reminding myself that the tinted primer wasn't the real color...it was so purple and flat. The red has so much more depth and life. Phew! Springroz, I'm not sure if my cabinet maker had to do anything special for the 4 stack of drawers. All I told him was that I didn't want really deep cabinets as I had 3 stacked before and I was always digging for stuff and it made me nuts. Mariagarcia495, I had the overall feeling but left a good bit to my cabinet builder and contractor. I knew I wanted that sink centered on the south wall with the windows surrounding, red cabinets with a black countertop (as much as I could afford and then maple to finish off the kitchen), cabinets to match the pantry that we were keeping intact, and to improve the flow of the room. My contractor suggested moving the door to the outside to the right to allow for the sink on the south wall, moving the fridge to the old oven area, and the general orientation of the cabinets. The cabinet maker has been excellent about suggestions for hardware and final color choices. They really are excellent and I'm thrilled I have their services in my area. I'll have photos of the cabinets soon. Thanks everyone!...See MoreHow does Colonial Cream granite look in my kitchen??
Comments (15)I agree with cpartist. Most granites are always going to be competing with your backsplash. (Including that original granite.) I don't think you need a solid color necessarily, but something that is much simpler than most granites. I really like a lot of Ceasarstone quartz patterns. They are are simple with just a little interest, and they have a lot of pretty natural colors so you could hopefully find one that is a color match. I agree with your idea of going lighter. Some brown/tan Quartzites (not quartz) might work also if you find some slabs that are fairly uniform. But I would look at quartz. It would help give you the more transitional look you want than the granite with the rest of the elements in your kitchen....See MoreBen Breen
