Species that can survive a New England winter, outdoors?

I want to try my hand at Bonsai and would love to do this with a species that lives outdoors, full time. When I visited the local Bonsai greenhouse, one of the people there mentioned that if I want an outdoor specimen, it needs to be stored in an unheated garage or basement, I have neither as our basement is heated by the furnace that lives in it, and never truly gets cold. I'd guess it stays around 50*. The other option he mentioned was to dig a hole in the ground, 12" deeper than the tree is tall and cover with a board and seal to prevent rodents from chewing the tender plant.

Can no species survive totally outdoors, in a container, in the Boston area??

Second to the above.....

Are there any Oak species that would work? I have an affinity of Oaks, especially White Oak (Quercus alba and Quercus bicolor). Other species that interest me would be: Hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana), Maples (especially A. saccharum), Dawn Redwood, Elms, Firs, Cedars, and fruit trees such as Apple and Hawthorn.
