Update: Dining Room, Please Help with Chair Fabric
Comments (25)I agree that none of the above is the answer. The trellises all seem too clean and too geometric to work with the rug, and the ikat is ....I'm not sure, maybe too large. Plus none of the sample colors seem to work well with the carpet either. They seem to provide too much contrast. About the curtains, I think you need them. The room has a definite formal look, and to my eyes, the window as it is now looks unfinished, but not in an intentional way. What you do with the window might depend on how you feel about pattern. If you want to limit patterns to the carpet and chairs, then one possibility might be curtains in as close to the color of wall as possible. If you want more pattern, then how about the colors in the carpet? I don't think white, ivory, or cream curtains would work. I think they would give the effect of three walls in that interesting gray (?) color and then one big white wall. That would be too modern for your look. I also think you do need curtains rather than a valence or swag. Reasoning? There is a large expanse of white blind, and the blinds look contemporary. If there were an array of other contemporary elements in the room, I think they'd work, but there is a soothing "stillness" that comes from your furniture, accessories, and color choices. So the blinds look jarring and out of place. I think they need the softening effect of full-length curtains. Sigh. It's always so much easier to give a critique of other people's spaces than to finish any of the rooms here!...See MoreDrape hooks for vintage drapes.
Comments (18)The two in the middle are the ones you need (the ones Carol showed). They go in the seams thru the lining. The top of the drapery pin (what they're called) would be about 1/4" to 1/2" down from the top. You'll need one at the leading edge, about 1/2" from the edge. The other end is the return edge which goes to the wall. I put a tenter hook in the wall and sew a small ring on the edge to hang onto the hook. The hooks from the drapery pins go into the small rings that are on the bottom of drapery rings that hang on a rod. The drapery pins can be adjusted if necessary....See MoreBallard custom drapes? Comments (0)Does anyone have experience with Ballard Design drapes? I would be especially interested if you used them for fabrication with fabric that you provided. I'm trying to get a feel for overall quality. Also, did you price out similar work with a local custom shop? I LOVE traditional drapes, but they are sooooo expensive to do in a custom fabric. Any advice in general would be greatly appreciated! I can sew, but to do a pinch/box pleat, line, weight and trim a full set of curtains is above my skill level. Thanks!!...See MoreDrapes or no Drapes!!
Comments (22)Oh, the sconces have a context! Well, that's a whole different look! Yep, get rid of the gloomy painting. I also notice there's so much spaciousness on your cathedral-ceilinged wall, and it looks jarring to me juxtaposed against all the things in the living room. I don't own a cathedral ceiling myself, though, so I don't have experience addressing this. I agree on finding a home for the loveseat in another room. However, I'm not convinced a chair identical to the black one would be the best choice. I think I'd choose one that has a softer shape (rounder? fluffier?). You have so much with severe lines already, I think it would be nice to have a contrast. Then I'd echo the "softer" line in a piece of artwork across the room. Or maybe you could get a contrasting curve by removing the sconces and one of the table lamps and putting in a conversation-piece floor lamp with a dramatic arc over the room....See MoreMimi Weiler
