Here's what works for me: Installing a printer is a two step process - connecting the printer to "the network" so that it can communicate with connected devices, and then entering a setting in a specific device to direct print jobs to a specific printer. A wireless printer probably first needs a wired connection (as owbist suggests) so that the wifi entries (SSID and password) can be given to the printer. Instructions for this most certainly came with the printer. After the printer is connected, you need settings in your laptop to direct the print jobs. I don't have a Vista PC so I can't give you the exact terms to look for, but the rest would be done in Control Panel. You'll have a choice called Printers, or Devices and Printers, and in that section you should see a choice that says "add a printer". That wizard should spot the printer on the network, identify if a driver is needed and handle that part. If your printer came with a CD, start that up in the laptop first, to install the driver. The wizard should then guide you to setting up the printer as the default destination for print jobs. I'm not sure what you mean when saying "wireless printer, connected to new Win 8.1 desktop". If it's connected to a desktop with a USB cord, you've accomplished step one. If you plan to use it with a wired connection to a PC, you need to enable it as a network printer.

Katy, Sure hope you enjoy that new Wireless Keyboard/Mouse. What Brand did you buy? I've always liked the Logitech Line the best. I started with the original Logitech 3 Button Wireless Mouse (still have it). My first Wireless Keyboard (not sure of the brand name) was Infrared and it was horrible, had to have it pointing towards the receiver at all times. I have the MX5500 Combo hooked up to my Desktop Computer right now, best Logitech has ever made (it's Bluetooth and has a great range)(very pricey, think it cost me around $170)! Once you've tried Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Combos you'll never go back! BTW, Windows 10 Updates are nothing to worry about. They've been coming for many, many years and will continue to come. I've had a couple minor problems, but really nothing to get excited about. I have Windows 10 on 5 Laptops, 1 Desktop and 1 Tablet, all running great! It's good that Microsoft is staying on top of any problems! When there are just so many different varieties of computers out there with so many different components, you really just have to wonder how they don't have more problems then they do? You've really got to give them credit! Since you're going to Buy a New All-In-One Desktop, I'd just go ahead and get it with Windows 10 Preinstalled! I'm sure there won't be any problems with a New Computer w/Windows 10. Most of the problems are with Older Computers that are being Upgraded to Windows 10 and the older software that's already installed.

Problem finally resolved. After being on the phone with 2 different techs who couldn't help and blamed it on the printer, I called the printer company today and they said call the internet provider. I called them and they said nothing was wrong with that. I called the Geek Squad and they offered to come at a high price. So I called Linksys back AGAIN. This new person had me to change some settings in the router online, changed channels and tweaked a couple of other things, took about 3 minutes, tops and now it's printing. I did try to download updates like the post above but my computer wouldn't allow the download, something about not being able to read it??? Anyway, it works now. WHEW!! I was just about to pack it back up and return it.
