Also, do you think reds can be worked in anywhere? In the daylight, when the tone get bluer, I'm not sure if that's a pleasant color contrast, or again, if it's too big a leap.

That color will work! It's all about the finishes/accessories you choose.

Don't know the size and layout of the room but if you get a lot of natural light and work on a computer, my first consideration would be window treatments to effectively block the sun so that it doesn't interfere with your screen (depending on where you place your computer).

Yeah there are actually three windows, it's a corner room and a bit of an odd shape. What color curtains would work best? A dark gray? Navy blue? Something else entirely?

It's a rental so I can't repaint, but love these ideas! I was thinking some darker earth tones might work too, and the fabric of the curtains is an interesting point!

Your window treatment will depend on the light control you need and also your budget. As April mentioned, a blind would be a good idea so not to cover the beautiful trim. My family room has denim-like blackout curtains against light walls and honestly, it can look cave-like during the daytime when the curtains are closed.

What size rug do you need?

I was thinking about a rug just for my desk area, maybe 3'x5' or something

Make sure the rug is big enough so you can move you chair in and out from the desk without the rug interfering with your chair.
