How hard to push builder on two issues after move in
Comments (4)Kirk..yes it's possible he's having problems with those particular subs. Every other sub has been top knotch. Both have been a little problematic. Phoggie, I believe the stucco work was done midday and they didn't see the distinctly different tones. It's pretty obvious in the shade, I can't believe they intended to leave it the way they did. To be clear on the concrete floor, the issue existed from day 1 so I don't think of this as a maintenance issue. But then again, I'm new to concrete floors and ultimately I'm less concerned about that than making sure the stucco matches. Holly. You're absolutely wrong. For one, the builder chose the stucco, we bought a home in progress and made changes to the interior only. For another, it simply isn't correct to have stucco be two different tones in a distinct line half way up the house...that's ridiculous....See MoreUsing the space we need after retirement
Comments (19)Paula, I love your table and what a deal! The changes you've made in your home are very smart too. We made changes in the layout of our home before it was built. I have photos to share of the original and the changed floor plans along with simple explainations. Original Main Level Plans: Our Changes to Main Level Plans gave us an extended length garage space for storage. We are not the type that would use a formal dining room but enjoy reading so with a few changes in the floor plan it became a library. Kitchen was changed to allow for a walk in pantry and adding a doorway into the ladies parlor at the front of the house. All other doorways were widened. As for windows we changed to five smaller windows over the three shown in the original plans for the sunroom and removed the mini window in the half bath since I had a cabinet that would have covered it anyway. A window was also added to the back of the garage and the side of the library. Original Upper Level Plans were changed to add a sleeping porch off the master suite. Master bath was changed in my opinion to better use the space. The walk in closet was changed to allow shelf storage for folded clothes and shoes and to allow more room for bedroom #4 to be used as a home gym. Our children's bed and bathrooms were changed to better use of space. You may notice window placement was changed in most rooms up here too. We live on what used to be a tree farm so there are beautiful views. Our Changes to Upper Level Plans...See MoreAdvice for mid-life career change after cross-country move?
Comments (32)juddgirl, I'm a mid-life MSW and I'll say that it doesn't lead to many low-stress, low-confrontation jobs and most entry-level jobs for MSWs don't pay enough to warrant the cost of the degree. I'm in a job market similar to the one you'll face in Tennessee and nearly everyone I went to MSW school with five years ago regrets the degree due to low pay and high-stress positions. That said, if you do attend an MSW program you will make valuable community and employment connections while you are in school, and with your law degree in hand as well, you will no doubt have a different pool of jobs open to you than the "average" MSW. My advice to anyone of any age about getting an MSW is to find five people in the area where you might want to practice, who have been working as MSWs for at least five years, and ask them whether they would advise their own child or best friend to pursue an MSW. My experience suggests that 4 out of 5 will advise against it. My DD wants to follow in my footsteps and I am working hard to convince her otherwise. MSW school is a racket if ever there was one....See MoreHow long after moving in did you start having over night guests?
Comments (17)Our first overnight guests stayed in the basement way before the house was done. The upstairs was just dried in- no insulation, drywall, etc. Of course, it was our son and a bunch of his friends for a rafting trip. We also hosted Thanksgiving that fall, with everyone huddled in the basement trying to keep warm. Other overnight guests have included my BIL, and friends who parked their RV at our place for a couple days. We just tell people that there are no amenities, and they get what they get. The food and friendship are great; things like HVAC and toilet facilities can be sketchy. We're almost done with the main house, but there is only one bedroom, so visitors will still stay in the basement. Eventually, there will be a finished BR and bath in the basement, plus we are planning a rustic great room for the barn, complete with its own bathroom. Actually, WE'RE living in the basement right now while I install and finish the wood floors!...See MoreUser
