Help me pick my choose between cabinet options
Comments (11)Well, we went back to look again at the stains of the KM, and I didn't care for the Kaffe on the Oak, it looked really red with almost a black color sunk into the graining pattern. You can kind of see it in the pic that I posted, but in person it was really apparent. Not that it was bad, just not a look that I was going for. So we are instead considering the Kaffe stain on Cherry wood, door style is just slightly different too. Trying to hit on the "transitional" theme moreso than contemporary. The current freebies are a free sink base, free hardware, $2500 for quotes over $15000. Then a couple of other things like a tiered wooden cutlery tray, pull out drawers in the pantry to the left of the fridge. There may have been a couple of other things too. Total with install is going to be right around 15K. I really wanted to deal with the local custom guy, as TorontoTim mentioned, they aren't a place that has a huge flashy showroom. It is a family company in business for many years, really liked the cabinet maker we talked to. We walked through their warehouse. But I'll be honest, working on that has been kind of frustrating. We are going "through" somebody so not communicating with the cabinet maker directly except for the one meeting, then all follow ups have been through this other guy. I don't know that he understands what I want, and frankly I am tired of arguing with him. I had given him the full mock-ups provided by a semi-custom line (similar to those I posted above). So he should know what I am looking for, it was right there on paper. But this this weekend I had to explain to him the difference between full and partial overlay and then have him tell me he doesn't think that this is the "standard" with that cabinet company (even though I had emailed him and asked him about it before a week or two ago), and it isn't that big of a deal anyway (who are you to tell me what is and isn't a big deal). Without "real" drawings, how do I know that their aren't a million other things that he doesn't think are that big of a deal. It is the vagueness that is really worrying me. It is kind of unnerving....See MoreHelp me choose the best kitchen layout - lots of ideas
Comments (12)With the layout options you have...I'd pick the one with the most space, between the fridge and range. It would also be nice to have more space between the sink and range...but where would you put things from the fridge? The L-shape doesn't offer much in the way of prep space, unless you use the peninsula. Personally, I would want to maximize my countertop areas...having one area for a 'landing space' by the fridge, a larger prep space by the range, a place for dishes by the dishwasher (if you can't load them right away) and an area for seating. Everyone uses the kitchen differently, but even though it's a smaller space, I think it could be much more efficient than the options you've shown. Of course, you can choose to stay with the same layout you have now (without the wall oven) and if it's what you're used to, it may work for you. But, I'd rather come up with a more improved space, if I were spending money to remodel. Just my two cents......See MoreUh- Oh, Cabinet does not fit, open shelving best option?
Comments (11)This isn't your fault but whoever designed the soffit could have built it so that it was in alignment with the break between the glass doors and the solid doors. The soffit may not have been able to be smaller, but it certainly could've been made slightly bigger to accomplish this. Since I tend to obsess about such things, I would partly rebuild the soffit to line up no matter if I had a cabinet made or not. In my own mind, it is going to look like a compromise other wise, but some compromises are better than others. Usually there is enough slack in the wiring that moving the fixture down wouldn't be a problem. When I run across things like this, people then say. "Well that could add a couple weeks and a couple thousand dollars to the project", and I say "A couple weeks will be gone in a couple of weeks anyway and that cabinet will be here for maybe 20 years. And a couple thousand dollars in a $30-50K project? Worth it to get it right?"...See MoreCorner Cabinet Options and Garbage Can Size ?
Comments (6)We use our super susan for small appliances, which works great. My other corner is closed off completely, with drawers on both sides. I thought long and hard about that decision, and hated the idea of "wasting" space, but ultimately it is effective use of space that matters most. The drawers on each side of my corner get used every day; I developed plenty of space in pther parts of the kitchen for things that are not used as often. The best way to maximize storage space in YOUR kitchen is to map out what you have, and how much space your things need. Drawers are the most efficient use of base cabinets. The space above the fridge is valuable too - that cabinet should be as deep as the fridge. Lots of people put vertical dividers there, for cookie sheets, trays, cake pans. I had my cabinet maker install pull-outs above the fridge, which is perfect for lightweight, bulky items. Oh, and build your cabinets all the way to the ceiling, with extra shelves in the uppers. That was noe of my biggest space gains....See MoreRobin Morris
