Nearly Finished French Ikea Kitchen - need advice for backsplash
Comments (1)Hi, I dunno where you are in France, but if you're in the northern part of France (Loire valley and farther north), you should be able to find real slate tiles intended for outdoor terrace/patio paving in any DIY store. I do not see why you could not use those as a backsplash. If you're in the south, it is almost impossible to find slate as it is not considered a local material ... If you're looking for a better selection of tiles than the ones at Castorama and Leroy-Merlin, you should look at stores that are specialized in tiles and sanitaryware (here in Paris area, they are called CMR or Espace Aubade). I personnaly think that a slate backsplash would provide too much contrast ... I would look for a white/cream tile with a matte finish but an interesting texture (like the "Clays" series for Casamood) or something that evokes concrete ('Zoom' from Villeroy&Boch, 'Masterplan' from Lea Ceramiche in 'Grigio' shade), or glass mosaic with metallic effects (Vetro Metallico from Casamood). The later would recall the mettalic touch of your countertops ... As a side note, I've never seen a good looking 'wall' tile here, I always use tiles intended for floors ... links : Ceramiche Lea 'Masterplan': http://www.ceramichelea.it/acm-on-line/fr/Home/produits/collections/cardCatmasterplan.33.1.20.2.html Villeroy&Boch Zoom : http://www.villeroy-boch.com/fr/fr/home/produits/carreaux/pieces-a-vivre.html?sid=Zoom Casamood 'Clays' : http://www.casamood.com/serie.asp?id=107&idlv=108&idd=108&idcol=4&num=4...See MoreSuggestions, Advice, Details to add before we order our IKEA Kitchen?
Comments (24)Thanks Benjesbride! Well, as seems to be our fashion, we had an unexpectedly rushed last minute do-or-die IKEA kitchen buying experience when our contractor told us he'd start putting in the cabinets on Tuesday (we had been debating trying to reuse the old ones that came with the home vs buying anew). So we drove to IKEA the same afternoon I posted this question. After much consideration, we went with the Ringhult white fronts (the kitchen associates said those were the most popular/durable with strong reviews) and we took everyone's advice to get rid of the corner cabinet and move the dishwasher into that space! I was pretty nervous about making the call (husband was not a fan of losing the extra counter space since we have a number of appliances that we use regularly), but we both agreed that having the kitchen feel more open was with the trade-off, since everything else in the home is pretty closed off with narrow passageways. At this point, we just have to move forward and hope for the best (I second guess myself constantly) and hope we made the right choice for layout and aesthetically! Benjesbride, funny that you suggested that pantry where you did; one used to exist there but that's where the termites were found and after they opened the pantry up, the space felt a lot bigger. But, yeah, I'm counting on all those IKEA drawers to help sort out our kitchen storage system (along with donating things we don't use or need)!...See MoreWine/Mug Cubbies - IKEA Kitchen Hack Advice Please
Comments (0)I've ordered my cabinets - Bodbyn Gray. I have about 8" of filler space on the each wall surrounding my sink window and was planning to hack a wine/mug cubby similar to the Horda open cabinets pictured HERE so go in that filler space on each side. The Ikea Horda cabinets are is too wide for my space and I also don't like that the sides and shelves are so thin - I think it looks cheap. So I was planning to make some by cutting down wall cabinets to give me a 5" width interior which I think will fit coffee mugs on one side and wine stuff (our always open BOTA box, some glasses and maybe a few bottles at the very top. I have a good color match for the Bodbyn gray, and was planning to add a painted a face frame to cover the front edges of the wall cabinet and the front sides of the interior shelves. The painted wood added to the front would add some depth - but it might make sense to build it out to about the same thickness as the door fronts on the surrounding cabinets anyway? The interior of the cubby's would still be white, but the adjoining cabinets will have glass fronts with the white interior showing through, so I'm hoping the white interior of the cubby cabinets will not look odd. The frames are $30 each (12" width which would be cut back) and shelves are cheap so the cost would probably be far less than the $60 for the Horda. I was hoping to use these Low Profile Shelf Supports so shelf supports would not be visible - one benefit of the Horda version. I hope they will fit the Ikea shelf holes! I'm just wondering if anyone sees any flaws in my plan - or if you think the white interiors will look funny. I could always cover the interiors and shelves with paintable veneer or just try to paint them directly, but I'd rather not make this any harder than I have to!...See MoreNon-IKEA apron sink for IKEA cabinet? Advice and/or info please!
Comments (22)I'm just going to say this in case - the wide Domsjö is two bowl sink. It never came any other way. Sektion has standard sized drawer fronts. Buy an extra 36" wide taller drawer front just in case you need it - you can always send it back. Sektion and Akrum cabinets had different sizes of drawer fronts. Stop by the kitchen area and ask about issues with installing the Domsjö sink in a Sektion cabinet. The Domsjö should come with replacement metal bar for the front & bar edges. The front metal bar takes the place of the top bar on the front and the back. You might need to cut down the back panel to fit under the bar. We did a simple reinforcement of the cabinet by adding plywood across the back on the inside of the cabinet under the bar and then attached the official cabinet back to the ply. Given a choice, I would buy ANY other white farmhouse sink and undermount kit. Eventho it's hundreds more. In our case, the sink wasn't quite deep enough - there was a wide gap between the sink and the wall in the back that was plugged with two tons of caulk. In the end, I named the sink the Rain of Terror because it dripped water everywhere and rotted the Ikea wood counter. If you use someone else's sink in an ikea cabinet, know that you may need to cut the cabinet top back as shown in @sh's photo because a 36" wide undermount sink is 36" wide at the front or near to it. The sink maker has an undermount kit (usually) that amounts to metal bars with screws under the sink. The bars stretch across the cabinet from side to side. Then, use your "extra" drawer front and carefully cut it to fit the front....See Morekelly
