ER need help...cherry vs. painted cabs/we don't agree!
Comments (25)oruboris: I don't agree. We do have stained cabinets, not because of any trend, but rather because they fit with our decor. Following your logic, since the 50's stained cabinets have been the norm. There are probally a far higher precentage of stained cabinets in kitchens today than painted ones. I suppose that makes stained cabinets, um, ... well common? And cherry? Often refered to as timless, I suppose that must mean in the next decade or so it will become, um, ...well...tired, and then tiresome? And berryberry: When is the last time you tried to strip off a modern stain finish so that you could paint over your cabinets? Easier said than done. In any case, if your kitchen works well, looks new, has a reasonable level of quality componets, and feels good to you and yours, it will take decades before it will become dated. Only a few trends in kitchen design have not lasted over the past 50 years, painted and/or stained cabinets are not on that list, but Avacado green is. :-)...See Moregranite install went wrong 4 times...what do we do
Comments (12)Ossiemom - I feel your pain and know exactly how frustrated you must be. We've been living in our basement (thank goodness for that since it would be an even bigger issue if we were in a hotel!) for 2 weeks now while the floor company tries to get our hardwood floors to look decent. And I say decent since I'll accept even that at this point! So what should have been a 4-5 day job is now going into week 3 and we still may have to start over - it's infuriating! Anyway, I'm sure they must have done this, but just thought I'd ask to make sure - did they seal all the granite when they put it in? The reason I ask is that we used 2 slabs of Cambrian black that weren't from the same lot and they looked completely different before sealing. One was much lighter than the other, however after sealing they look exactly the same to me. We knew this though PRIOR to buying them, so it wasn't a surprise. For some reason one slab already had sealer on it and the other didn't when they were brought to the stone supplier. We had them put sealer on a test piece from the lighter one just to see how it looked and we couldn't tell the difference. I would think that they would have sealed your granite if it requires sealing though, so then it definitely isn't acceptable if they look different! Good luck - I hope you get everything worked out to your satisfaction!...See MoreWe go to buy our IKEA cabs this morning and then....
Comments (28)Rovenorth, You tell Scherrs what ikea boxes you're purchasing and they will build the correct doors and drawer fronts, drilled for the ikea hinges and drawer boxes. You can get paintable doors or cabinet woods, unfinished, or primed or completely finished. You can also get matching (in essence) cover panels or decorative end panels that match your doors. We got a few sticks of the same type of wood locally to use for fillers and starter moldings, but you could probably just go ahead and order the fillers. Toe kicks are the same issue. Again, if you're not doing an exotic finish, you can get a local matching wood. We just used nice plywood and are painting them dark. If we can't stand it after a while - I'm afraid of shoe marks - we'll replace with the stainless toe kicks from ikea. We liked the look better than matching the cabinet. The tolerances on the doors and drawer fronts are such that you don't see any bit of the white or birch ikea cabinet - with these exceptions.... -- The stuff that doesn't have doors! Those open shelf end units that are about a foot wide or the small perfects - the wine one or the shelf one. -- Either sink base when you use ikea's farm sink. It's just not positioned correctly as designed. This is a job for a bit of paint to make it look like a shadow. If you use one of ikea's non-white colors, you'd have the same problem....See MoreXpost from HD Need thoughts on stain for my cabs
Comments (15)Aren't Barkers door samples already sanded? Also, I don't think you can apply regular stain on top of shellac. Gelstain yes, but penetrating stains I doubt would work because I believe the shellac has sealed the grain so it cannot penetrate in to the wood. Don't take offense, we just don't want to see you spend a lot on new cabinets and not have it turn out nicely. DIY cabinet finishing can save you a lot of $$ but it helps to have some previous experience staining wood. Tacking a staining/sealing project of an entire kitchen is a big job. Might be a good idea to post on the woodworking forum, lots of knowledgeable people there who can advise you on this....See More- 5 years ago
