Advise on Climbing Roses
Comments (4)I am very surprised that you didn't more of a response on this thread. Where you live I would think that many roses would do well. Have you searched the HMF and some of the online nurseries? I just was on Northland Rosarium and saw Red Eden - with an old bloom and it does say some fragrance. I myself have Fourth of July, a wonderfully vigorous rose but more of a wild rose look and not much fragrance to my nose. I am also getting Dublin Bay this year, it doesn't have much fragrance either, but I have tried several climbers and have grown weary of the problems with them. There is a red rose, Courageous, which is very fragrant, ruffled blooms -- saw it at Heirloom Roses. We have another climber that is called Lavender Lassie, the blooms are actually pink and it is nicely fragrant. There are many shades of pink, light pink, dark pink. Check out the online nurseries for ideas and check them on Help Me Find. Best of luck, CJ...See MoreCan anyone recommend a good climbing yellow and climbing red rose
Comments (5)Rev d'Or did very well in Earthkind trials for Texas gardens, so may do well for you, too. I like a modern red climber in my garden - Dublin Bay. It reblooms well - no fragrance, though. It can definitely take the heat. Anita...See MoreClimbing Rose Recommendation
Comments (8)Crust_muffin, Cl Mme Caroline Testout has a gorgeous flower but sadly was a black spot magnet in my no-spray garden. Cl Pinkie took her place. Happily, she holds onto her leaves, has little if any BS and few if any prickles. She wants to grow horizontal but that's not her situation in my garden as you can see from the link below. She's only been in the ground a year. She has not been the massive bloomer after spring, but that may be due to her age. Maman Cochet, Climbing is a big Tea rose with gorgeous fat pink flowers. I don't know if she's flexible enough for your situation. (You do know - or maybe not - that climbing roses need to be trained at an angle or they will only bloom at the top rather than all along the cane due to apical dominance, so often you'll see them fanned out or running on a fence.) Here's a link to my blog about her. http://sherryocala.blogspot.com/2011/07/maman-cochet-climbing-first-two-years.html Another one that's nice and flexible is Reve d'Or. She's a pinkish apricot colored Noisette. She has thorns but not big ones like Maman Cochet. Here she is all trimmed up. If you want a once-bloomer, there's always R. Fortuniana. He has white double flowers in spring and will climb 25' easy into your trees. He does have small thorns but not bad. Duchesse d'Auerstadt is a strong yellow and not too thorny and is in between MC and RdO as far as flexibility. Rose Petals Nursery near Gainesville will ship or you can visit. I get most of my roses from Cydney now. She's sweetheart and can advise you, too. In fact, she came to my garden a couple of months ago for cuttings. Angel Gardens is in Alachua. Both have websites. These will take all the Florida sun you can give them. Sherry Here is a link that might be useful: Pinkie, Climbing...See MoreClimbing rose recommendation for San Jose
Comments (8)Just FYI, put the passiflora vine somewhere where it's happy. It's the sole food source for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly, which is a close ringer to the Monarch. There is nothing more delightful than having a cloud of a dozen butterflies dancing in the sunlight over one's garden!...See MoreRobThomas
