I like the 8 foot doors in double doors better than a single with sidelights unless the single is quite wide as per millworkman's suggestion (very tall narrow doors can look off). Our ceilings in the entry are 12 feet so I am glad we replaced that 6 foot 8 inch door in our house prior to our addition with this taller one. The 8 foot doors looks so much better with tall ceilings. We have a fiberglass door that looks like wood. It was quite thermal, so not sure all double doors are created equal in terms of energy rating (we are in Canada and the door is north facing so we paid attention to energy ratings). Based on the leaves on the ground and a guess about your climate: yes, I'd install a storm door. :) They help with heat loss, of course, but they also protect the door and hardware from the elements. My grandparents' home does *not* have a storm door because they didn't want to cover a beautiful new paint job, with the result that we've had to repaint it every five years or so. :( In climates with sleet/hail/snow (which usually also have some intense spring storms!), storm doors usually don't detract from the appearance of a house because everyone expects them to be there! In my neighborhood, house numbers are spray-painted on walkways: definitely not the best look ever, but very important for emergency services, and let's face it, most of us spend very little time staring at the front of our house. Is there room to put some decorative numbers on the flat portion of the overhang? They might not be large enough for emergency response, but they would be very visible from the street for guests/UPS/etc., but leave clean lines around your doorway. The front of your house looks beautiful, BTW: wonderful work!

Skies the limit once you strip it down to the rough opening. What do you want? You can usually get a single door in there some some smaller sidelites as an option.

Is the reason for the storm door over the entry door because the entry door is unsatisfactory (e.g., leaky, not energy efficient)? I ask, because I argued for storm doors for our condo's old, wood entry doors and, after determining they wouldn't fit, we replaced the entry doors with Provia Heritage fiberglass doors which have worked really well (very energy-efficient and quiet). That said, there's a building across the street from me with white, full-view storm doors. I think that white door really makes the building looks cheap. (Provia also makes storm doors.) -- amateur
