Which Grapefruit is the best tasting?
Comments (1)I have a Rio Red and like it a lot. It grows very fast, and they are really sweet. Give it plenty of room if you get it....See MoreWhat's the best RED grapefruit?
Comments (11)@patrisetfilio - Thanks for the kind words. Grapefruit trees in general tend to be cold hardy. If your Meyers Lemon does well there Grapefruit would probably do okay also. See if anyone else is growing grapefruit in your area. I've never grown Rio Red, but it's the standard red commercial variety in South Texas and has mostly replaced the problematic Star Ruby as the leading DARK red variety for commercial purposes. Duncan is an old hardy large variety which is very seedy, but the very good slightly sweet flavor makes the seeds worthwhile. In many old abandoned/neglected groves in which most other citrus trees have died or only the root stock survives you'll still see a big old Duncan or Marsh grapefruit still producing full of fruit. While both are good white varieties - I would probably take Duncan over a Marsh on most days. Marsh is the tart variety you buy at the store. Duncan is it's slightly sweet larger cousin. Duncan has fallen out of favor commercially as people now want everything seedless, but it's good flavor has still made it popular as a dooryard tree. As the seeds in a Duncan are all in one spot, it's not an issue for me. I find seeded tangerines to be more of a minor annoyance than the seeds in a Duncan. For Red Grapefruit I grow Ruby Red (the standard commercial variety) which is very good. I have also grown Thompson Pink, tho Thompson pink seems to be a shorter lived tree and more susceptible to frost and limb dieback problems. That is only my personal experience & observations with a few Thompson's/Marsh Pink trees - not scientific....See MoreGrapefruit Seedling
Comments (1)Hi Apayne...Would you happen to know which grapefruit you have? I would think since grapefruit are fairly cold-sensitive, they'd survive, but the snow accumulation is a concern. I've read Arkansas can get as much as 5" of snow, but how long does it last? A day, days, weeks? Also, you mentioned it can drop down to 28-34 F degrees..how long, would you say, freezing nights last? Do you have anything that can be used for protection, like little strands of lights? Comments (10)As an in ground tree grown in the proper climate, Star Ruby will be edible by Christmas, fairly good by the end of January, but never does get extraordinary. Grapefruits become sweeter when grown in sticky-humid locations with high heat, because high humid climates have little change in day/night temperatures. Grapefruit can be grown in containers, but are the worst choice of citrus to grow as container plant, Grown in a residential atmosphere, where it is impossible to provide the high temperature and sticky humidly required, the fruit cannot develop sweetness and matures both slowly and poorly. An indoor winter grown container grapefruit, will take what will seem like an eternity to mature, and still will not become a quality tasting fruit. You will be able to grow the tree, but you will always be disappointed with the fruit....See MoreLaura LaRosa (7b)
