After hearing so many of your suggestions, I now know that my concerns about the dreaded wall in my living room were legitimate. I really appreciate all the comments, ideas and helpful suggestions. This site is like having your own private staff of decorators at your disposal. Parma is right, the space was supposed to be for a fireplace, but we decided that we wanted the fireplace in the family room in the basement. Couldn't afford both. Probably was a mistake. I read your suggestions and looked again at my pictures and could see exactly what each of you meant. Things I had never noticed before. 1. The backs of the shelves do need color to make the display pop. Right now everything just fades into the background. 2. There's no cohesiveness to what's on the shelves and there is way too many things. 3. I have already taken down the two small prints on the sides of the mirror. What was I thinking? 4. The jobots are too long. I had never noticed that. Do they need to go to bottom of the window trim? 5. The mirror does not do justice to the space. It may be too small, wrong shape, something's not right. First of all, I really want the upper ledge gone. The problem is talking my DH into letting me find someone to close it in. I love the idea of finishing out the shelves as a bookcase. I think that would look wonderful. Do you think old books would look better in the space rather than newer books? I am a book collector and have many shelves full of novels in various areas of the house. Les917: I really like your idea of the Sunburst Pediment and would like to find a way to incorporate it into the redesign of the space. great advice upthread I'll try to be short, probably repeating several people: -get rid of the white console next to the fireplace/look for smth else instead if you need it there for function -think of other window treatments. curtains? woven blinds? roman shades? any of these will look better. move your sectional a bit from the wall, both to allow room for window treatments and because furniture generally needs at least couple inches to breathe..that wil also make room seem larger -you already purchased the ottoman in the same color and style of the sofa..off white, right? well something different would be better, but it's okay..buy a throw, fold it and put there to break your lines a bit. tray is great too-both for function and beauty. you'll appreciate it when watching this TV -I liked reading how your wife gets her art:) okay..so if there's no real room for other suggestions(I'm also prejudiced against mass produced canvas art..maybe she can be talked into a print instead?..)..put that art there first. Make sure it fits-seems huge?.. Say you go for that a very similar art, you have there-a bit of white, black, brown, indigo blue, fiery yellow white and brown you already have in your room (btw like your furniture) pull your other colors (in pillows and throws and accessories) from that art -deep sophisticated blues, golds. can be metallic accessories (like vases or flower pots?), can be softest fur pillows can be velvet, can be knitted throw. everythhing you buy-make sure it's a different texture..leather is sleek you've got enough of it. Speaking from experience-I also have my fair share of leather:) then look for a big ticket items like curtains and a rug. (or simultaneously..just keep your general scheme in mind). you can decide to make them fairly neutral. repeat the color of the furniture, just different material of course. or go for one vivid deep color but make it a shag rag for example. Don't try to match pattern to art..art has a mind of its own. Look at the room as a whole..what does it ask for? and know yourself of course..say I love many rugs but I don't like to clean them lol. You know whether it's high traffic area, what your habits are, and whether you'll be sad for 5 min if the rug will have spots and then get over it, or will be sad for 5 days. when you buy a side table try, again, to introduce another texture, just different material in this case. maybe wood. maybe ceramics(garden stool?some of these look really modern). every new material you bring creates dimension. Dimension is something you look for when creating spaces. Why? well that what we've used to. Ouside always has it. Even when it's a desert or an ocean. It has depth. we need to recreate it with all sort of ways and means that are availiable to us.. Good luck! will be a cool room edited because of thousand typos..))

Really nice find. Agree you should address the potential hazard of the wood stove near all that wood -- consider having a pro take a look at it and suggest options. On that taxidermy suggestion ... IF you (or your family member) caught it or killed it and proudly had it mounted by a pro, then yes; however, if you didn't, please don't hang someone else's trophy on your wall. Furnish this cabin for use by the number of people who will be using it most often -- not by the maximum you'll have only once a year. You can always keep some reasonably comfortable folding chairs for guests rather than cluttering up your space with additional seating rarely used. It appears that adding some storage might be in order -- go vertical to get the most storage from the footprint of any items you add. Some kitchen storage around your refrigerator is well worth considering. That cabinet in the corner is claiming a lot of space for the amount of storage it actually delivers. Items with multiple purposes could be worthwhile. A large storage ottoman could be a window seat and provide guest seating as well as storage. Choosing one with a lid that flips from a solid side to a cushioned side would mean it could be used as a coffee table or ottoman -- by adding wheels, you could more easily move it to use it for those additional purposes. You might want to rethink the rugs you're using by the door by the kitchen -- replacing the two with one longer runner (one that will catch pine needles and dirt) that is small enough to be washable in the largest machine at the local coin laundry would be a good idea ... especially if you choose the rug with the additional objective of making certain is not a potential stumble hazard. A cabin makes a great place leaving behind the drama(s) of daily life. That usually means that keeping any people pictures to be displayed to a minimum -- even zero -- is a good idea. Your cabin is located within an actual nature scene so you don't need to hang pictures of that kind because they'll not be able to compete with the real thing just outside the window ... and shouldn't try. Let the windows and view hold sway. You have some large windows for enjoying the view. Consider adding some stained glass -- and not necessarily larger window hangings; a few of the smaller, thicker Tiffany style glass sun catchers could both reflect your personal interests and compliment the natural light shining through your windows. Easily changed, sun catchers could laud your pet(s) and/or acknowledge the changing seasons and/or celebrate different holidays and/or occasions. Enjoy your space.

1. What color and type/brand of flooring would you recommend? Looking for a "wood look" flooring that will stand up to big dogs, dripping kids and is budget friendly and scratch resistant. No wood flooring will every hold up to big dogs. You'd be better off going with a wood look tile. They're not the cheapest, but they hold up well and won't need replacing after a few wet dogs run thru your new cabin. 2. What type and color of counter tops? Should the island and counter tops be the same or different colors? I love the look of quart, but would be interested in more affordable options that would hold up well. Since you say you're going for cozy, I'd suggest using the same color for a more harmonious space. Changing the color works well in larger spaces in my opinion. 3. The rectangular game table will be placed near the entry door. Looking for furniture placement ideas and decorating ideas. Not sure about this one, sorry. 4. What should I do on the wall with the fireplace. My husband is hanging a television at the top...ugh! Between the windows? The backlighting is going to be a pain to look at while watching dark shows. Please also be careful about curtains at those windows so close to the fireplace. 5. What color appliances? If budget allows, you can get "panel-ready" appliances and you can put in wood paneling. That could be great for a cozy cabin look. If budget is an issue, then I'd go with stainless steel, should match well with a rustic cabin feel.
