Kitchen Pass Through Tiling Advice

Hi all! I am going to be adding a mosaic tile back splash as pictured below. I am pretty sure I am going to remove the small Corian back splash that is currently there, pictured below (advice on whether or not to do that is welcome!) but am really seeking advice on how/when to stop the back splash around the opening to the living room. The ledge between the rooms is painted 2x6 and the molding is fairly simple door molding.

My thought was to:

Stop the tile at the bottom of the cabinets and use tile edging pictured below to trim the top edge of the tile.

Cut the ledge 'protrusions' on the left side that extend past the opening above so I can have a clean line to lay the tile.

Use the same edging going down the right side of the tile, along the opening to the living room, and terminate the silver edging once it reaches the ledge.

Any advice on a different idea? Thank you all!

I would place the tile where you see in pink

I suggest the extruded trim be placed where I have noted the green

I might not use silver. That will draw too much attention Maybe consider the soft gray color.

It might be very difficult to separate the Corian backsplash from the counter without removing the total counter. so a straight line can be cut.

Thanks Beverly, that helps tremendously!! The current back splash is a separate piece from the counter that was simply siliconed in place, so it pops off easily. The side splashes have been removed and I was planning on NOT doing a side splash since it would look a tad goofy.

Whether to go down to counter height with the opening: Are you tidy? Do you leave things around the sink and will it bother you to see the backs of the things you leave around the sink from the other room? If you want to have a bit a screening around the sink I would leave it and you can create a countertop ledge/bar area at the higher level, the seating would have to be bar stools, not counter stools. If you don't want any screening of the sink from the other room, open it down to counter height.

I think the above posters have done a very thorough job of explaining why this isn't recommended.Therefore, I'm not going to go there. I will answer the OP's question in my best opinion. What I would do is put the wall behind the cooktop the height you need it-Hidingthe cooktop. Then I would put my granite shelf at bar height. You will have some wall above the shelf on the bar side, but that will prevent things com inadvertently slipping onto the stove. I wouldn't design it is a pass through, more a bar/window.

That's going to look so pretty! I would paint the pass-through the same tan as the kitchen wall...and when you say "walk-through," do you mean the untrimmed doorway? If so, I would also use the tan. It will probably read a half-shade darker than the kitchen wall does, because of the shadow, and I think that will mark the transition really nicely, and set the new blue room off as a separate space more clearly.

How great that you're considering a pass-through. It's a real shame that style trends killed them off so completely (just a long temporarily, I'm sure) because they can be a great way of practically having it all. I also have no idea where my favorite tear-out is. The home, though, is warm-elegant-traditional in style, and the pass-through isn't particularly large but is handsomely framed to create a great view into a gorgeous kitchen room (rich red walls and creamy white cabs). No counter on the outside so people can just stroll by and look in, and the kitchen side has shutters that can be closed for privacy as the mess builds up during parties, etc. The biggest reason this feature looks so great from the outside, though, is that a focal point is centered in the view created, either a window to a green garden or the stove and hood. Can't remember, but the quality of the view created was key.

One more question @BeverlyFLADeziner, if you do not mind. Where the tile meets the side walls, would you run the extruded trim there as well or just have the tile butt up to the wall? Thank you!!

No need for the edging there.

Good luck. If you should decide on a color, sometimes HD or Lowes have to order them in.
