Is this slab worth shortening my island for?
Comments (33)I think you have a lot going on between the stained island, the BS, the perimeter counters and the island counter. You mentioned "playing well together", and just like IRL, the more players there are, the harder it is to keep everything calm and connected. I love that Romy was able to show a number of instances that are similar to yours. I don't think that the 13" overhang would necessarily be a gating item for me (does this include lamination for the waterfall edges?). But, it would be the number of design elements that you are attempting to mix that would need careful looking at. I agree with Romy that I might wait on ordering the backsplash until everything is in, just to make sure that it all works together. Must admit, and I swear I am not trying to be a devil's advocate here, but I feel like I will be happiest if I buy the marble no matter the conqences of the etching. I have had two friends who had always coveted marble and they both ended up pulling the trigger to go with marble. After 6 months, they both say that the etching doesn't matter. They LOVE their counters. While I can't yet say that I am in the same camp (my counters were just installed and we don't move in for 90 days), I am thrilled with how they look and am looking forward to actually living with them....See MoreI've chosen my marble, cabinet color and backsplash!
Comments (21)Cam76, yes that's Susan Jablon. I just love it! a2gemini, I did things a bit backwards - I picked the backsplash first and designed the kitchen around it. LOL I do plan to order after the cabinets and marble are installed just to be sure but I'm pretty confident that this is the bs. belle_va, yes, I'm doing beaded inset cabinets from Conestoga in frosty white. Brian at the cabinetjoint has been beyond patient with me. This is not a process for the faint of heart, nor one who is indecisive (shamefully blushing). :)...See MorePlease help me with color scheme to go with butcher block island
Comments (9)I had a similar color scheme in my last kitchen. All white cabinetry with seeded glass uppers. Counters and backsplash were marble slabs. Floor was a very dark coffee stain. I also had an oak butcherblock counter from Ikea that I adored. I didn't stain it because I wanted to use it as a work surface. It held up remarkably well! The cabinets below were painted a color called french pear. Sort of a yellow/green/grey I included a link that has a similar color with butcherblock. There's only one pic that shows the island well so you may have to hunt a bit. As for perimeter counters I always think soapstone or paperstone looks nice with white cabinets. They both have this matte finish to them that makes them absorb light in this lovely soft way so that the difference between the black and white is less stark. If you want something lighter you could always go with a quartz or stone that resembles marfil marble or limestone in a honed finish. (I don't recommend using either on kitchen counters as they're too soft). Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Island with butcherblock and green paint...See MoreWhat gets chosen first? The countertop or the cabinet?
Comments (18)For me, it was a combination of both. I knew I wanted light countertops regardless of cabinet color, either granite or quartz. I knew I really wanted white cabinets deep down but wasn't sure if it was in our budget so I also looked at stained options just in case. Before we knew pricing, we picked out our favorite quartz counter and also went to a slab yard and only saw one granite that we both liked. We did this so we could make a decision right away once we found out pricing. We figured if they were close to equal in price, we'd have to really think about which one we liked more, but if one was quite a bit cheaper we'd choose that one. Once we found out pricing we knew we could do white cabinets (with stained island) and ended up choosing the granite because it was about $1,000 cheaper and we liked both of our choices almost equally. I would probably visit some stone yards first to see what kinds of granite/quartzite/marble you have available to you in your area -- we don't have every option available that I've seen online so that right away narrows it down a little. If a few catch your eye, take photos of them or write them down. If you fall in love with a slab...you can then determine whether you're okay with basing your cabinet selection around the stone, or you may realize that you want to keep looking because you do want those white/gray cabinets afterall and this stone wouldn't work well with painted cabinets. Going out and physically seeing the stones makes it so much easier to me -- I saw so many online that I loved but when I saw them in person I couldn't believe they were the same!...See MoreNewEnglandgal
