Comments (39)Hello everyone, I've gotten my updates back and I think everything is much improved! Please note the Laundry/Mudroom which has some much more efficient space. Still thinking about what will be what in there (may stack washer/dryer, like I have now), need a shoe storage closet, etc.. Also, the kids bedrooms have been reconfigured so I now have a window in the kids bath (yeah!). My daughter gets her walkin closet and the kids furniture fits nicely in their rooms. I just tweaked the kitchen island. Recommendations from the kitchen forum is for the fridge to go at the end of the long row of cabinets, but I really would prefer to have it closer to the deck/living/dining area, even though I have to 'minor-ly' cross through a walkway to get there. I would really like the exterior to be all stone in the front- see 'inspiration' pics with the exterior shot. I think the exterior needs a bit of work too... Thanks for your opinions! Walkout basement will be what I tackle next....See MoreFixes a problematic layout? 18th Hour request for help?
Comments (41)Ha, davidahn! If I cooked like Rachel Ray, life would be very different in our house! :-) I will say that we have sort of a "team" dynamic for cooking in our house, because of our food business but also because of how we like to raise our girls in terms of helping to make and clear dinner. It is rare that only one of us is ever in the kitchen preparing a meal so there will always be another hand to ask for xyz. It's funny, I started with the cooktop in the island b/c that's how my parents had theirs and I loved sitting across from my mom and talking while she cooked dinner. She, on the other hand, did not - I only found out later! She felt that others couldn't participate and it was always hot and if she got distracted talking (we like to talk in a household of all girls!) something always good over or under cooked. But, I agree with you on the whole "back to the guests" issue which is why I ended up putting the cooktop on the side at least - side to the guests didn't seem so bad. ;-) I am still trying to figure out the light alignment. The lighting store said to go with them the length of the island, so perpendicular to the orientation of the seating area. I have two lanterns that are very minimal structure with more glass but they are 14" in diameter in the box area (17" up top where all the metal loops out). Lighting guy says parallel to length of the island, what do you think?...See MoreFireplace inspiration photos, please!
Comments (30)I found these three pictures online. I'm putting them in order of most favorite to least favorite. Thoughts? Opinions? We've gotten three estimates on our chimney flashing repair and they are all identical in work to be done and price (how often does that happen), so we're fairly certain of exactly what we're getting into there. Once we nail down what we want the fireplace to look like, we'll be on our way to a warm and not fugly living room. :) We're only looking at the mantel and legs, not the style of the firebox on these. Our fireplace contractor's mantel guy would be creating something that replicates the look; we wouldn't be buying the mantel from these original sources. Number 1: Number 2: Number 3: (Problem with this one would be the firewood box -- which I don't care for, and don't have room for anyway. That would leave an asymmetrical appearance, since there would be nothing in the wall area next to the existing firebox.) Always happy for input. I'm very confused and miserable about this stupid fireplace....See MoreNeed a color to blend elements in my family room
Comments (95)Kangaroo has some pink undertones, because they show up in other rooms in my home. They don't show up as much in this north-facing room, but I suppose they could when it's all painted. Shaker Beige is pretty most of the time, but it has definite green tones that come out in some light -- but nobody else seems to think Shaker Beige looks green. It looked mustard-green in my old house in a dim, north-facing study. Kangaroo looks really nice against my orange wood, so I'm torn about this decision. I do think either will work, and SB is definitely tried and true. Here's a link to an article from Kylie M. about Kangaroo. She seems to like it. https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/benjamin-moore-affinity-the-best-neutral-beige-gray-paint-colours/...See MoreRelated Professionals
