Comments (12)I have 8/10 acre in a neighborhood zoned for retention of lot size. Of the 5 adjoining properties at one time or another I have had someone come onto or reach onto (in one case) my property and damage or remove plants etc., without permission. The only property where nobody has ever done anything is a rental, the other cases have all involved property owners. In the worst*, most recent case the couple has been very slowly erecting a fence between us, because I have varying amounts of weeds in view most of the time. Where this has become a problem is some time ago the husband announced he had documents from the city stating that the fact that I was not participating in their project entitled them to a one foot wide strip of my land for fence maintenance purposes. This led to repeated episodes of his wife coming sometimes several feet on my place to spray herbicide, without prior discussion. Recently she managed to nail some potted plants I had near the boundary as well as cut off and spray some self-sown shrubs (of a non-weedy species) I had been thinking about retaining as part of a new planting I am going to make in that area. When I pointed out that she had damaged my plants and other unsatisfactory aspects of what she was going she got in her car and drove away while I was still talking. Subsequent discussions with her husband became near shouting matches where all these ridiculous beefs it turns out they have been harboring were aired by him, including spurious accusations of malevolent intent or actions on my part. Bottom line is if you have somebody looking over at you or your place and disapproving of something, cooking up complaints in their heads - that need to have no basis in fact to occur - property rights and what would appear to be a normal level of discretion and respect may often not have a significant effect on resulting actions undertaken. (After the one spraying episode (of at least several) that damaged the potted plants I asked both representatives of my city and my attorney about the one foot automatically granted property access; the people at the city had never heard of any such thing and pretty much laughed at the idea, and my attorney said no municipality would ever grant such rights). When I worked for an arborist he was earning thousands per year being retained as an expert witness by attorneys; often the cases were ones where somebody had had a neighbor's trees removed without permission. In my area people get crazy about salt water views, a local judge(!) made headlines by having something like an acre of an adjoining public park logged so he could see better. *Except, perhaps for walking out to the back garden one day and finding about 30 ft. of branches skinned off our side of a tree that is entirely and clearly on our lot, except for the half of the crown that hangs over the fence - and was mostly untouched! Comments (46)Before you go critizing Jannie for her lack of responsibility for not planning ahead, try walking a mile in her shoes. See how you would feel with the poisons in your body that the kidneys automatically excrete. I don't know her circumstances but her husband may be handicapped, her daughter may not live near her....we don't know. How many neighbours would be up in the middle of the night and would be willing to shovel her out when she has to be at dialysis so early? Are there even neighbour's around her? Now how does one know in advance that there is going to be a snow storm so severe that you can't get out of your driveway because the snowplow has totally blocked you in? You may go to bed at night knowing it will snow during the night but it is anyone's guess how accurate weather forecasters are, how much snow there will be. Areas in the States that aren't used to snow have been bombarded with snow this year. Would Jannie even be well enough to shovel the snow feeling poorly needing dialysis? Where I live, police don't automatically come for rescue calls. You explain the circumstances to the 911 operator and they decide who is the best people to dispatch. If it is not an emergency you just call the police station/fire station which Jannie did. How was she to know in advance that the three taxi cabs she tried and the ambulette service wouldn't take her? She exhausted all of her options first. The police man could have been more help. If he wasn't called out on an emergency it wouldn't have killed him to offer some assistance. It would have been better helping Jannie, than spending time in a coffee shop or just sitting in his car waiting for a call. There are lots of times on a policeman's shift where they aren't doing anything. Yes policemen work hard, when they work, but they do have down times on their shifts as well. Since there are three taxi services where Jannie lives there would be a fair number of policemen as well. Jannie pays taxes and this was a one time emergency and not one that is a habit. Talking to the police chief at least sets a standard in case such a situation should arise with anyone in the future. It does not mean that it will go down on anyone's record. It would be interesting to know what was actually decided by the police chief, if a policy is now in place to help out in situations like this....See MoreI pulled weeds yesterday...
Comments (4)We just cut our roses back a few weeks ago, but we already have a lot of new growth. I think a lot of my plants died over the cold cold winter. Sigh. Back to the garden center for me this weekend. The only thing that has bloomed for me are my tulips and hyacinths and my lilac bushes are blooming now. Most everything else is putting on new growth. Although my rhododendrons have a ton of blooms on them and they will hopefully bloom out pretty soon to give us a punch of color. Our fruit trees are blossoming now too so that is real pretty although messy. ha I think your shutters would work great for a movable garden. I'm sure you could construct something pretty as well as workable. If you don't feel like tackling it this year though, a lot of people just plant tomatoes in big pots and they do good. That's the only way my one SIL gardens and she actually gets a good mess of veggies every year. If you lived closer I'd keep you in supply although the last 2 years the tomato bushes we've bought haven't been that great. Everyone in the neighborhood has complained. Hopefully this year will be better cause I live on tomato sandwiches in the summer. :) And coming from the south can you believe I've never tasted fried green tomatoes? I'm gonna have to try it this year. Well, I got everything cleaned up yesterday and I'm off to start on my one stroke slate. I was thinking I may use one of the bigger slate pieces to make a big outdoor checkerboard. The kids would enjoy that I think. Talk to ya later. ~Anj Oh, and touche'... little one did not smile for her pic. She pouted and glared until it was over. The girl said goodbye sweetheart and she said goodbye sweetheart back and gave her the biggest smile ever! URG!! Oh well. Comments (15)I had a horrible day with my computer as well!! I checked my emails and saw that all of them were dated 2010. All the 2011 emails were gone...I checked the "deleted" folder and nothing there either. I looked in the other folders..nothing. I checked C drive, program files, Outlook..nothing. After a couple of hours of this, I called my server tech. He said he'd check my account and see if they were still on the server...NO. He said I (or someone else) had to have deleted the emails, therefore putting them into the deleted folder. Then deleted them from the deleted folder, thus deleting them from the server..permanently. I absolutely did not do that!! DH said, "Well, maybe you did it and forgot." I can't even tell you my reply. :( I do delete the unnecessary emails as I read them. I flag the ones I need to save. I publish a monthly newsletter for our little city and have people who write some of the columns for me via emails. I try very hard to get the paper out by the end of the month with the details of activities for the following month. So as I was preparing to start the paper for January, my writers had emailed their articles. See? Now I'm rambling, of course. The episode ended about 4 p.m. with 2 Excedrins, coffee and a nap. Pulled the cover over my head and decided I'd surface next year. But, oh no, someone mentioned that Christmas had not come yet. Deep breath...I am now wrapping zillions of gifts, preparing bedrooms for DD and grands who will come home with us after Christmas & making cookies. Yep, all at one time. No stress......See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years agogeorgysmom2 thanked gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
