Blue roses to go on sale in 2009
Comments (35)I did the research on the Florigene (originally Australian owned but bought by Suntory) transgenic rose for an article that never got written (sorry Paul). The gene transfer technology just about killed me. For the record THE ROSE IS NOT BLUE! It is LAVENDER with a distinct bluish ting. Yes, it gets its color from delphinidin, the blue plant pigment. Florigene was able to transfer the gene for delphinidin production from the pansy (not the petunia) to a pink Hybrid Tea rose. The rub is that the pigment (delphinidin) expresses itself differently based on cell pH. The natural cellular pH of the rose is acidic enough for the delphinidin to express itself in the purple end of the color spectrum, BUT NOT BLUE LIKE WE SEE IN DELPHINIUMS & HYDRANGEAS. More work still needs to be done. On a positive note this advance will allow us to have electric purples that are a whole lot more colorfast than the mauve (or Murray as the late Graham Stuart Thomas would say) roses we currently have, which-by-the-way whose color is created from a completely different biological process involving Cyanin depletion and the natural purplish hue of cell vacuoles. Still with me? If so there are lots of interesting articles on the transfer technology involved. Go to PubMed (available free through the National Library of Medicine) and do a search for blue rose. I should warn you that you'll need a degree in biogenetics to understand the terminology. I spent months and months reading through the literature before giving up. Best wishes, Patrick The color of CARDINAL DE RICHELIEU is due to the natural hue of the cell vacuoles. As the cyanin pigment bleeds out the color changes from dark crimson to a muddy grape purple, finishing off a soft dove gray. Cardinal de Richelieu along with Veilchenblau and Rhapsody in Blue all represent the extreme end of this biological process. Image by Cnetter at Hortiplex. Comments (8)It is an easy rose to keep neat, and the flowers are gorgeous, if scentless. The question is: how cane hardy is it going to be for you in UT. Most modern climbers are reasonably easy to control. For example: 'Fourth Of July', 'Eden', 'Altissimo', 'Berries n Cream', 'Compassion', and, yes, 'Eden' can all be kept tidy with moderate effort. It's the old ramblers from the early 20th century, the Noisettes of the 19th century, species (wild) roses, and the Wichurana hybrids like 'New Dawn' that are the rampant ones. In zone 5/6, size won't be so much of a problem as it is in say Florida or Southern California. The problem you have to handle is winter die-off....See MoreWhat do you think about this rose?
Comments (3)cool....understand though...that when things go wrong with roses it is usually simple things...and these simple probs tend to repeat themselves each and every year.....the main thing that will change is your knowledge in reconizing probs and thus solving them....when you learn to drive a car...the car is what teaches you to drive it........drop the clutch..probs...etc etc.....people can tell you what to do but it can only ever be the car that will teach you....roses are exactly the same...though the process is a lot slower....give it a year or two....listen to the odd so called "expert"(good luck)....and once armed with a bit of info....the rose will ALWAYS teach you and tell you whats up...you just have to learn to read the signs!.....having said all that.....yes...roses go dormant from the bum up...but...i would take a wild stab in the dark and think more along the lines of downy mildew.........i would suggest that most growers when confronted with something theyare not sure off....be it novice or "expert".......the general procedure is to give it a trim...a feed...and keep the water up to it.....this time of year it's usually the water (humidity) thats working against you (fungal disease)...but i hope you get my drift....See MoreLure of Duchesse de Rohan
Comments (13)Carol-Thanks for another vote for the Duchesse. I'm in North Idaho in between farmland. The zone 4 roses do well but the Zone 5ers get pretty well nipped. Today the wind is mercilessly whipping the rose canes. They look like the car lot inflatable dancing balloon guys. Fortunately only one of my roses grow tall enough to greet me in the face. Mariannese has a grafted DdRohan, I may not have that option. I'm not sure where I will settle on buying one, or if I'll even be able to snatch up Duchesse PinkWonderfulness this time around; she's one of 3 that I wanted badly also, worse now ! My order for RdViolettes and DdDrReynaud are paid ahead for 2018 at Joy Creek, and I requested DPWRohan be added to my order if any came into stock. Think I'll keep checking off and on to see. She's carried at Rogue Valley and Burlington too, just in case you know anyone ? that might want to snatch one. I woke up at 12:30 AM and couldn't go back to sleep until after 4 thinking of how to make the Flower bed bigger....See More- 5 years ago
